PMR does not use mechanical ascender-style devices when working with rescue loads (>200kg), nor do most high angle rescue groups. 3-wrap prussiks are the standard (per Rigging for Rescue). Several climbers in PMR and other groups use ti-blocs for personal use and love them, but their behavior varies depending on the rope diameter. Do some trial runs on your own ropes before you rely on them. There are rescue-rated devices out there (traverse 540, etc) but they usually ratchet and do not use teeth to capture progress. Rescue groups will be the last people to adopt new technology for a rescue load situation until it has had a few years of real-world testing, etc. As said above, I wouldn't go on the word of someone just because they are in a rescue unit. Experience varies widely. -Iain
