  9. Wow, a SunHog revealed! Teeing-off into the glacier - nothing quite like it.
  10. Yeah the Villard is on the NE aspect, next to Early Morning Couloir (has someone skied that?) I have rarely seen it runneled, except for below the couloir, but I suppose I'm usually elsewhere by late June. For a party, show up at the base of the Villard G. on Memorial Day weekend with a half-case of beer and a lawnchair. It has been a pilgrimage for 20 years now for many. Matt- You've probably found a better way in than I have then. The snow block is usually 3 miles from the trailhead at a "y" in the road. Maybe taking the right instead of the left would get me closer, never thought about getting in elsewhere than pole creek over there.

  14. One of the biggest thrills I get out of ski mountaineering isn't necessarily just the turns. It's the power you feel as you blast around the mountains with so little energy expended, looking back at a distant summit with satisfaction knowing you were just there 20 minutes ago. It's like a whitewater kayak for mountaineering, while all the walkers are in rafts.
  15. you forgot to re-login as extremo_mtn_dude. Anytime I am in the air and my skis are not facing the direction I am going is a time of terror for me still.

  21. Seems like there are bad apples in every orchard. There have been reporters who have "accidently" left behind mics in i.c. rooms and newschopper pilots popping in on freq. to ask "how they can help" live on tv. But then there are plenty of cool reporters who are really interested in getting the right story and will work with you to make it accurate and helpful. Only takes a few lame ones to get a reputation I guess.
  22. the villard glacier is one of the go-to spots in spring. skiable all the way from the ne ridge. access via pole creek is often an extra 3 miles in early season since there is one shaded spot on the road that holds a lot of snow late. high-clearance trucks can often get through it however. the nw face, viewed from the closed-in-winter mckenzie hwy looks to have some great lines too, but takes a good amount of work to get in there in comparison. a circumnavigation of north sister is fun, though there is a lot of up and down around the north side moraines and spurs.
  23. I'm sure they get tossed all over the place in the crud. You'd have to get them pretty long since I think they are pretty narrow compared to today's skis. Even the r:ex is considered mid-range these days
