I think you are mistaken. As I recall, the issue was that bolt war squabbles between climbers don't impress land managers and often result in loss of access for everyone. Just because you think you are the good guy doesn't mean the authorities view you that way. The MAN doesn't care what variety of cockroach you are, call too much attention to yourself and he's likely to reach for the pesticide. Ill thought or pointless as the idea might have been, it wasn't about convincing anyone that climbers didn't disagree about bolts.

I'm wondering this too. I'm familiar with Mr. Leaf's contributions, and I wouldn't have picked him for an individual bucking for a religious conversion. It's ostensibly climbing related, so we'll let it run for now...

I said "for example" as a hypothetical situation...

Kevin, beating the rotting carcass of the Infinite Bliss debate really does no favors to this site or the sport in general. No one is power drilling more routes on Mt Garfield, and I'm sure that Windham and Martin are paying very close attention to wilderness boundaries. Mission accomplished.

That's a good one I've never heard before.

I couldn't agree more, and the repeal of that doctrine would one of the most profound reforms I can imagine for this country. Oughta have bipartisan support too, if you ask me.

Oh, for your serious reply: Note that when Smith & Cosgrove power drilled a variation on the Muir Wall when attempting a free route, neither the Park Service nor general climber opinion demanded that they (or anyone else) remove those bolts. Instead, the desired outcome of no one else power drilling on El Cap was achieved via all the publicity around their arrest. Perhaps next you should go hassle those two into removing their illegally placed bolts. They both post on Supertopo, it should be relatively easy for you to get their attention.

Comes right down to it Dawg, you're gonna bitch no matter what I do. Note that there was no need to quote yourself, I left the pearls of your opinion intact and in situ.

Butt bag and bosun's chair serve completely different purposes. For example: I'm going to need a bosun's chair to put in all those rap bolts on my new route on Prusik Peak, but you're only going to need a butt bag for the hanging belays when you repeat it. Its all about the amount of time you're spending in the seat and the other baggage you're hauling around.

Thank you for making a completely unintelligible post, thereby preventing any misinterpretation.

Yeah Bug, seems like I frequently completely misinterpret what you're saying. Nonetheless, every point made in 2010 can be found in the posts from 2006. Feel free to reread them, there are some pretty good points made.

Since you're single now Sobo, people are going to start taking this sort of thing seriously.

Commuter Bike: Hybrid vs Cyclocross vs Touring?
Off_White replied to Bronco's topic in Fitness and Nutrition Forum
The Colonel is moving up in the world if he's a Baron now. I always liked that guy. -
Because the topic is actually valid, even if the behavior of the various posters is not. So, I'll leave that turd there for any to dissect, and everyone can cavort here to their hearts content. Thanks for making a home for it Kevin. I'm not interested in parsing out the considered argument from the inflammatory dreck in that thread; I'm a traffic cop, not a babysitter. I would like to quote Bug, since he hit the nail squarely on the head when he said:

*sigh* Preiss's secondhand information that Alpinfox posted is interesting. What's uninteresting is everyone rehashing the exact same positions they held in the original version of this thread back in 2006. If you want to carry on the bullshit, go start a new, another, yet another thread in spray. Rather than clip some of this dreck out and send it to spray, I'm just going to lock it so the damned blabber stops. Go play in spray if you must.

Great vid, looks fun. I really liked the use of the tripod for the stop motion effect, and the weather rolling through was a nice bit as well. Thanks for the etiquette heads up Jens.

Good to see the Republic of Provincetown is still secure.

What, you missed it the last time she was featured there?

On the plus side, this route now draws most of the online armchair complaints, and we don't have to put up with constant whinging about Condorphamine Addiction anymore.

The bill got removed from the agenda earlier this morning at the request of the primary sponsor, taking it off the table for this session. Unfortunately, this wasn't apparent until arriving at the hearing. The implication is that it will be re-tooled and rewritten and come up again, but at least the Public Safety & Emergency Preparedness Committee is aware of the various SAR groups' position and likely they will be involved in any proposal from the get go. There was a strong turn out of great SAR folks from around the state prepared to testify, and written information was passed to each of the committee members. Certainly a battle won, but it will likely come up again. The guy from the state who's in charge of rescue coordination was also there, and it sounds like he's well aware of the minimal overall impact of climber rescues in the big picture of search and rescue operations for the state and is no fan of mandated beacons.

Looks like the hearing is at 10:00, 2nd floor of the John L O'brien Building which is SW of the Capitol Dome. I hope to see some of you there.

Take the bus 'cause I don't have a car
Off_White replied to rocketparrotlet's topic in Climber's Board
I get the impression that the people hitching these days are a little more desperate, the average drivers more leery, and those looking to prey on the desperate a greater percentage of those picking people up. Even if that were so, its still possible to hitch pretty safely, just pay attention to instincts and the impression you get from your ride: chat them up a little before you commit to getting in the car. Tips for hitching - > Have a legible sign about your destination - people need to know where you're going, and it needs to be easily readable. > Pick your hitching site, people need to have a little time to assess you, and have a safe place to pull over > Smile. Looking miserable and hoping to rely on pity for a ride is a terrible strategy, best to look upbeat and like you have something positive to add to the social interaction > Looking goofy is better than looking cool, you're asking people to trust you in their personal space. A friend one hitched from Olympia to New Jersey in the winter, dressed as Santa, with a piece of foam cut in the profile of a penguin, and a sign that said "Ho Ho Home For Christmas" and he made it across country in about the same amount of time as you could drive it. Hitching used to be a relatively common travel method for lots of ordinary folks.
