  1. Jay: The connection is that Dwayner kept posting pics of Tom (Sir Tom to you) and adding dialogue, in effect adding an avatar within the auspices of his prime online identity. Stoppard is actually a decent playwright, but he makes a lot of daft portraits.

    Gun Control

quote: Originally posted by trask: Over the years I have developed the notion that there is a definite connection between marksmanship and morality. This proposition cannot be proven, of course, but I think it has to do with the fact that the essence of good marksmanship is self-control, and it seems pretty clear that self-control is the foundation of good morals. Hurray for our side! cooper Hahaha, I've seen all those movies too. Everyone knows bad guys can't shoot worth shit, good guys don't even have to sight...
  3. Yup, I thought that before too, and this is just the kind of sly self-deprecating sidelong smirking chestbeating blushing spray that the Drewt specializes in. Wish I could be there, or that Anna had her license and could pick me up at the Olympia airport...
  4. I think its not spray unless someone reports it to the moderator.
  5. quote: Originally posted by Toast:Seriously, from an employer's perspective, what information do you get from the labs? Sounds like they give you specifics on "positives" and it's at your discretion wheter to blink an eye. Is that right?[/QB]The employer gets information on what specific drugs tested positive, I don't recall if there is info on degree of positive testing. Company response is totally up to the policy of an individual company, and results are not sent to law enforcement. In my company, if you've got diminished capacity, either stoned or hungover, you won't get to touch power tools and like as not you'll be driving a shovel and mercilessly abused all day. What you do on your time is your business, but the condition you're in on my time affects my income and your safety. I'm a sole proprietor, and the construction industry is mostly "at will" employment which means I can fire at any time for any (non-discriminatory) reason. Fact is, I like my employees, and I work pretty hard to make everything work out for everyone involved.
  6. yeah, testing mostly sucks. As an employer, I've done it to an employee once because he was fucking up big time, missing work and not calling in, and hanging out with a new girlfriend who I knew was a big part of tweaker culture out at the Nisqually tribe. He admitted to doing meth, but that he was turning his back on it, and the random test confirmed that. (though the testing agency called to tell me it was a positive test, he'd been smoking pot. I think they didn't quite know what to make of it when I said "Oh, good, its a good outcome.") The employee in question is still with me, but not with the bad egg girlfriend anymore. Drug tests suck, but so do junkies, and when you have employees unsupervised inside client's homes, there is a liability question.
  7. I'm not familiar with the issue, but its not usually sport fisherman that are the problem in fisheries, but rather the commercial industry. I know a lot of shit goes down in the oceans that is not much remarked on because its not visible, but I think that's mostly a result of bottom dragging nets and non-species-specific trawling, and the worst offenders are usually from other countries than the US (or Canada). This sounds like one of those issues that scientists not funded by one of the interest groups should have the largest input on the decision. Anyways, have fun, good aruguments, and raise your virtual hackles at the opposite side (whatever side you're on). I'm off climbing on the east side of the Sierra's for a week, so you won't have me to kick around until next month. Here's one to ya'll
  8. quote: Originally posted by trask: I'd like to give the Coast Guardsman a medal that ran over the wanking bimbo on the jet ski that was trying to upset the Macaw's whale hunt. BooYah! Did they actually run him over? I think that was the Sea Shepherd group involved in the Makah thing, and that Greenpeace has kept its distance. Native treaty rights versus eco politics, there's a connundrum to make any right thinking liberal's head spin. Personally, I side with the tribe.
  9. quote: Originally posted by RobBob: Off, The outcome might be lives lost due to a collision, or attempted rescue after collision, all because these chumps ignored common sense (not to mention rules of the sea). I've spent enough time on the water and at the helm to know it's a lot more of a physical risk than it might look in a photo. But you support rescuing climbers who push the edges of the "rules of the hills" don't you? Ask any of our rescue people on the board, that's a risky proposition for sure. I know that boat stuff is riskier than photos make it look, I wouldn't do it. Still, what Greenpeace does cannot be termed intentional physical harm. Ray, the way I read that article about the French racing boat it sounded like a he said/she said argument, with no witnesses coming forward that weren't involved. Its just a question of who you belive. So thankfully we're once again out of the rocky shoals of hard facts and plunging through the deep water of pure spray.
  10. quote: Originally posted by Cpt.Caveman: I know it's old but - http://www.cnn.com/2002/WORLD/sailing/05/20/green.areva.spt/ Harrassing the French is a good thing, isn't it?
  11. quote: Originally posted by RobBob: quote: The harm Greenpeace offers is financial and public relations, not physical. Hey Off, Now you know better. You have enough life experience to know how provocative those boats might seem if they were crossing your bow. That's physical jousting, man. Yeah, provocative like a snotty three year old bugging a pit bull at the food bowl. In a physical confrontation, there isn't much doubt about the outcome. I'm not trying to say that the obstructionist tactics they use are not physical, only that Greenpeace does not set booby traps or act like some black ops saboteur. Here's a pic of the pussys at work, harrassing the Russian Navy: [ 10-23-2002, 12:20 PM: Message edited by: Off White ]
  12. quote: Originally posted by Cpt.Caveman: are they engaged in any acts or stunts that can harm the "enemy"? Just some simple questions before I make any judgements.... The harm Greenpeace offers is financial and public relations, not physical. Some of their stunts are pretty damn bold too, getting in the way of large whaling vessels with zodiacs. I don't know that you would like their politics Ray, but they are honorable opponents. [ 10-23-2002, 12:03 PM: Message edited by: Off White ]

  14. quote: Originally posted by trask: Anyone that knows me will tell you that I'm a straight shooter all the way. Hell, I'm a card carrying member of Real Men Inc. I won't debate this with you, as you've nothing but lameass jabs to offer. Your shame should run deep. Trask, the point is that none of us know you. Or Peter Puget, or DFA, or any number of other people (only some of whom are part of Caveman's quiver of avatars) who are all virtual characters without a real world identity. Its not a problem, I just can't think of who can vouch for you. I must just be too social an animal, and wearing a mask would just make it harder for me to meet people. Of course, your goals may vary. PS: I'm glad you didn't make good on your promise to disappear. And you never did respond to the question of just where were you last weekend....
  15. quote: Originally posted by Cpt.Caveman: quote:Originally posted by Cpt.Caveman: Hey is it true greenpeace spikes trees and does other sorts of pranks similar to it If this is true then Greenpeace are a bunch of wankin pussies. Jeez Cpt, times are tough when you've got to answer yourself. I don't think Greenpeace are tree spikers, thats more of an Earth First or ELF action. Greenpeace is more Ghandi like, and tend to opt for obstruction rather than trying to inflict injury on those doing the work. They blockade, chain themselves to things, put up large public banners, and just generally try and get in the way in a manner that results in media coverage, which is their real tool. I think Greenpeace is also more active on an international scale than in the US, hence the French bombed their boat because they got in the way of French nuclear testing in the south seas, and the Indonesians hate them for exposing the level of waste spewed by those cheap overseas factories, etc etc. Despite GregW's lumping them in with other groups, they are not engaged in animal rights work in the PETA sense, and don't do much in the realm of regional planning. Personally, I think Greenpeace is a part of the myriad forces that help counterbalance Industry's monomaniacal self interest, and yield a more liveable world. Don't get me wrong, turning a profit is what industry is supposed to be all about, and profit is good, but unchecked corporate self interest does not work for the common good. Sure, common good is a (admittedly fuzzy) moral concept, and its where I differ from Mtn Goat's vision of five billion people looking out for number one and screw the rest of you. But the short answer is, No, Greenpeace doesn't spike trees.

  18. Maybe, just maybe, Trask is tired from his weekend exertions and is not up to par. Did anyone else notice that he posted nothing on Saturday and Sunday, in fact, nothing since 1:17 pm on Friday. Could it be he lurked among us there at the rope up, safe behind some cover identity? It may not be worth 55 pages, but me thinks the game's afoot!

  23. I'd vote for IPA, but I wouldn't turn my nose up at a stout either. Thanks TG.
  24. Yup, and the White House has become a favorite haunt of those who get away with going AWOL for a year. Mike, Sisu, and others, I understand you like George Walker Bush's politics and posture, but doesn't it bug you that this privleged son got away with something that would likely see you in prison?
  25. Thanks Pindude, I'll give Roskelly another read, its been a long time. I liked one review of Roper I saw last night: "take 1000 3x5 cards full of info, throw them up in the air, stack them as they fall, and you have Roper's book."
