Are you sure you don't mean 94 Bug? I saw one of those events while out walking in Olympia with friends after dinner. Winter night, but clear, and we had an excellent view of about 7 twinkling masses of varied size slowly cross the horizon. Really freaked out the drunk sitting along on a bench, he wanted to make sure we'd seen it too. News afterwards claimed it was a Russian satellite. Edit: A little searching reveals it was November 1997. Here's a link from a questionable source (ufoinfo.com ), but the descriptions of the event are as I remember, including the claim it went down in the Pacific despite the fact it was still well above the horizon as it disappeared east.

Heh, I read that plate and thought, "coming soon to a Michael Layton thread near you."

Besides, that's the new kinder gentler shoot-the-dogs-not-the-guy good citizen Gotterdamerung. I think he's feeding his adrenaline jones elsewhere and doesn't need to try and wring his fix from an online board. great photo btw.

Then I suppose you don't want the statistical analysis that suggests we're overdue for a big strike.

Yeah, and conversely, I hate when lefties who are ostensibly on my side compare Bush to Hitler. Ridiculous hyperbole just makes your argument completely dismissable.

That Komo link brought up a story about George Tenet's resignation, with Mt Rainier as the location. I understand if he thinks he needs a rescue though... Bummer about the real deal, wait for more info I guess. I've got a friend headed up there next week.

Another fun night.

Yeah, there's a reason I left that town and will never move back. It has nothing to do with the climbing though, there's lots of great rock in close proximity. FYI, Safeway bought Vons awhile back, hence the house brand overlaps. A Safeway card should work at Vons too, but I'm none too fond of that consumer data collection scam. Usually when confronted with that scenario, I say I've forgotten my card, and then when asked to enter my phone number, I use the local area code + 555-1212. Never fails, there is always someone who used that number to register.

What, Michael Jackson was in your backyard?? Did you call the cops or ask for his autograph?

Hmm, it just occurred to me to point out that my use of the terms "everyone" and "we all" doesn't include Fat Teddy.

Greg W said: Yep. Thank god the concealed weapon permit is so severely regulated. For instance, if you were involuntarily committed to a mental institution for 14 days you would not be elegible. If it was for 13 days, or any number of days voluntarily committed you would be okay to carry. Yessiree, that CWP sets the bar pretty high in this state. That said, having Greg or Gotterdamerung or Will Strickland carrying a weapon when they're out and about doesn't much concern me. It seems like we're all essentially in agreement, shooting a guy dead for his out of control dogs is just poor gun control on the part of the armed individual. Like Gotterdamerung said, shoot the dogs, reason with the individual. If it had been my unarmed ass on the trail, to be sure I'd have gone all troglodyte and picked up a handy rock to deal with the dogs as best I could. Again, I think everyone here is on the same page: uncontrolled dogs really suck. There isn't really a gun control issue involved in this event, it's more about inappropriate response, and the one jerk shouldn't have killed the other jerk, but it sounds like they're both jerks. As far as carrying guns goes, I guess I agree with Greg (the conservative fucktard) that it's a matter of choice. I think the banter about who is more afraid is just rhetoric, but we all make choices about what risks we take. I've never once in 45 years placed myself in a situation where I wished I had a gun, but I'm willing to accept that it may be a matter of luck and the choices I've made, rather than assume that guns are always inappropriate and should be banned. I don't personally see the need to be armed on trails around here, but I sure understand Will's desire to be armed up in Alaska. Frankly, it would be a mistake to put a gun in my hands, my utter lack of training would make me a risk to myself and all others involved.
