Bastages. This drilling has gotten out of hand. I want to be able to take the bus across the Sellwood, and your excessive drilling and chipping is ruining it.

Is it better to take a static fall onto a snagged (full strength) gear sling . . . or snap a loop, lose a few pieces, and fall on the rope instead? I'm sticking with my Metolius gear sling.

I bought my Stylus 400 for $269 last christmas when Fred Meyer was blowing them out.

Holy quickdraws Batman! You could aid that rig.

You couldn't have told me that three weeks ago?

My local REI did the same thing recently. Nothing good on the first floor and climbing gear gets a cubby upstairs. More room for all the soft goods is the name of the game.

We tried to work our way down from the top of the hill (Summit) to the bottom (Shady) when we where last there and got stuck down below Orange Wall. Couldn't find the stinkin trail. A couple of guys working the lower routes above the grassy ledges pointed us toward this ugly slot next to them and gave it the "looks like it'll go" endorsement. We dove down this thing and ended up greasing and trundling our way to the bottom. It was a hoot. Anyone else shwack that slot? Anyone know where the trail actually goes?

I don't think you could pay me enough to give them up.
-
I paid less for mine than I would've for an H6.

Or . . . get one of the new turbocharged Outbacks. They've got far more get up and go at any RPM than any of the naturally aspirated Outbacks (4 or 6 cylinders) and the similar gas mileage to the H6. It also runs at lower RPMs than the non-turbocharged four cylinder at high speeds.

If you put real chains on, you actually void manufacturer's warrenty (if that's important to you). The tires have such low clearances that when you turn while driving the chains will hit the wheelwells.

I really liked my ’02 Outback (basically the same as the ’04) and drove it hard in all kinds of conditions. Besides daily driving and trips up to Mt. Hood, I used it as my field vehicle for two summers on construction sites and never got into anything I couldn’t climb out of. That said, I never was too fond of the 5-speed Subaru used in those, it’s a bit clunky and you always seem to be waiting for the synchros. Also, in cold weather, the standard mirrors seem to be permanently fogged up. One other beef I had was that coming over the passes with several people and weekend gear, I’d have to drop a gear to maintain speed even at higher RPMs. I solved all these problems when I traded out my ‘02 Outback this summer for one of the much improved ‘05s. Got the 2.5 turbo and will never look back. The engine has 250 HP and about the same ft-lbs of torque so it pulls hills without even breathing hard. The difference in acceleration is amazing with the turbo charged 2.5 and it’ll accelerate like you’re driving a WRX. Subaru put a brand new beefed-up 5 speed in it (though it could use a 6) that is much smoother shifting and addresses all my previous transmission beefs. I also got all the winter goodies so my mirrors don’t get fogged, the seats warm up quickly, and the wipers don’t ice up. Besides that, the interior seems much less cheap and is put together much better. One other plus I discovered is that the rear seats lay down flat without pulling up the rear bench. Where I used to be a bit scrunched up sleeping in the back, I can slide the front seat as far forward as I want and create more sleeping room. It’s downright roomy now. Ground clearance is a bit better but as others have said, its not a 4x4. In dry conditions I’ve picked my way through some really rocky nasty stuff that I’d never drive a car through, but when it gets muddy or in deep snow, a real 4WD (that you can actually put chains on) is still the way to go.

Head for the hills!

Ten years ago, a crack climbing unit was sent to prison by an NPS court for a climb they didn't chip. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security snafflehound stockade to the Leavenworth underground. Today, still wanted by Larry the Tool, they survive as climbers of fortune. If you have a climb, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire The HC-Team.

Most likely. My partner and I have four days to sample the local fare. We'll be doin the long lines first and then stopping by the Callahans on the way back.

This really depends on the judge. Some judges are much more lenient when it comes to pitching tickets in court. My ticket for 88 in a 55 went to a Deschutes county judge who pitched it when the "State failed to appear." I walked out the door (passing right by the officer that issued the ticket) and went down to the clerks office. No argument or discussion at all on my part.
