  1. MattP, I believe.
  2. I'm writing the late policy for assignments as part of the syllabus. http://depts.washington.edu/grading/issue1/conduct.htm#behaviors
  3. These days it is illegal to grade a student on their conduct. What this means is that you cannot grade attendance or timeliness on assignments. Instead, you need to be clever and grade them on participation and the ability to master material in a certain amount of time.

The problem is there are no rules regarding the advisor-student relationship. Even the union contract is silly. Just try telling your advisor that you're entitled to four weeks of vacation. So it's up to the student to manage his advisor. I've had more success ignoring my advisor than trying to change him (and I'm not the only student who's had issues with him), so that's what I've done. I've focused more on teaching, and I may interact more with the educational group than the graphics group this year. My advisor is not providing me any funding, so I'm under no obligation to suck his dick. At my current stage of research, I don't feel I need his help/advice on anything. Yes, my prgress is slower, but I'm happier. My hope is that at some point I'll get badass-enough results that I can leverage with them to get my demands satisfied.

Yeah, so I may make exceptions to my rules. But then the problem is they come to expect it. Like the time he emailed me the afternoon before asking me to do a dog&pony show the next morning. Anyway, I emailed him a few hours ago asking to set a date and time for a meeting next week... who knows when I'll hear back from him.

?? When I told him I could meet today, I didn't mean that he snaps his fingers and I'm there -- he has to give me at the minimum an hour notice. I'll get absorbed with my work. I'll go out for lunch. I'll work at home and be 15 minutes from the lab. He should have picked a time the day before, or even first thing in the morning, and settled on that. And I've told him that repeatedly.

No, I had a wonderful meeting this afternoon concerning the course I'll be teaching in fall. I met with the instructors who will be teaching the course in winter and spring and with the primary instructor of the prerequisite. I get to be the guinea pig regarding our new curriculum revisions. We scheduled the meeting a week in advance, and we all showed up on time, qualities I sadly cannot attribute to my advisor.

So come on man! what was the outcome of the meeting?? Silly boy... he didn't notify me far enough in advance for the meeting. I sent him an email half an hour later, saying sorry, it's email, not a pager.

TLG, I don't date girls who play "by the book." Actually, I can't even remember the last time I've had a "traditional" Friday date. Probably years. I could care less.

update: Fifteen minutes ago my boss just sent me an email asking to meet in 20 minutes. This is a followup to yesterday's communications where he emailed me asking to meet in the next two hours while I was out for the weekly bridge lunch. I replied to him after those two hours that I could meet with him the next day. I refuse to bend from the "24-hour notice for meetings" rule.* He needs to be more responsible and organized than that. * perhaps a variation of the "girl may only accept a Fri night date if asked earlier than Wed" rule

I just figured out why. My boss needs to brainwash and enslave him before I can (me: innoculate)/(boss: corrupt) him

my boss just stole my employee, completely dodging the rules. if he wanted my employee, he should have spoken up two weeks ago during hiring time.

I use LaTeX all the time. What's your question?
  18. Last night's attendance: me, Klenke, Norman Clyde, Marylou, MattP, Tread Tramp, Peggy Goldman, and Archenemy, who left early. For those of you trying to put a face to Archenemy, she came to Pub Club a few times with GregW last year.
  19. Which offwidth move? The 6-8" squeeze at the start of p3? The 4" crack in the corner higher up? Or are you talking about the smorgasbord of wide cracks, chickenheads, and hidden cracks on p2?
  20. I think we all agree we have limited resources down there. There are still folks out there needing rescue. There's what could be an unprecedented ecological disaster, with gasoline, battery acid, etc., mixing with the floodwaters. And there's the abandoned pets that seem to make the good headline and capture everyone's heart because they're cute and cuddily. My opionion is we should focus on humanity and the environment (sorry, but an animal engineered to be cute and helpless through years of domestication does not get categorized under the environment), and we shouldn't rescue any pets, except where convenient (i.e. with the owner, and the pet won't take food/shelter resources otherwise intended for people).

  24. You'd think there'd be some way the mayor/governor could just say to the Feds, "You da Man," and the Feds open up to Chapter 37 of "When Bad Shit Happens," which prescribes a previously thought-out ready-to-go response.
