What do you consider to be the "obvious" recommendation? Hey, injuries produce pain, and injuries take time to heal. A sad and frustrating prospect, to be sure, but the only one I'VE ever found that works. You can do other things to help the recovery process, but one thing you can't do is climb at high intensity (or any intensity if your injury is bad) for a while.

Actually, I hardly think it's beside the point. What needs to be kept in perspective is what type of attack are we realistically looking at? We wouldn't build an elaborate system to safeguard against Martians, would we? So why would we build an elaborate system against a type of attack that no one in their right mind thinks we'll encounter! Although I do think there are some cold-war relics floating around in our collective (un)consciousness....

Secondly, it seems as though our very own CIA disagrees with your assessment; internal mismanagement, NOT the arms race, led to their demise (a view held by many, but reported by few). I haven't studied this extensively, but I found it interesting to note a differing view, one proffered by an organization such as the CIA, in the midst of Reagan's propaganda.
