Tyrolia was Austria until WW1. Ever see "The Mountain"? Cool movie about the first ascent of NP. I travelled a bit around Larga de Garda (or should I say Gardasee) in the Italian Tyrol a bit years ago. I remember how a lot of the German speaking natives didn't like being part of Italy (an artificial contrivance of the treaty that ended WWI in their opinion). I remember seeing the phrase "Sud Tyrol Frei Solte" (South Tyrol should be free) painted in giant letters on a big rock face. FWIW The place was crawling with German tourists who like to go windsurfing there, so it didn't even feel like Italy much anyway.

a few years ago we couldn't find any ice in littlewet so we ended up taking the lift up (they sell a one use ticket for like $20can) and skiing down the blackcomb glacier and then back along a cat track trail. about half way down there was something up to the left called "a day at the office". it was a pretty forgetable experience so i'd have to say you'd need to be desperate. might be more stuff i don't know about. you could always just start learning to ski, eh?

i have, on rare occasions, done a 'tele' turn or two with my heels unlocked, because i was in touring mode and needed to go down a small slope. in those cases snow conditions or the terrain may have made it a little easier to do it that way. i seem to recall it's easier than doing say an alpine jump turn with your heels unlocked. it's not a great way to ski by any means and has a high head plant potential. as far as the guy you saw there's nothing i wouldn't do a few times in the name of screwing around, or maybe iain needs a whole new population to get all about.
