[TR] Azurite and Robinson Slam (sort of) - 8/16/2
klenke replied to tvashtarkatena's topic in North Cascades
Like I said, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Oh, G-spot-misser, the places I've been that I'm happy to know you'll never go. It gives me more pleasure than you could possibly know. -
Well said, Patrick. Humorously, I had a friend back in the college days who was an avid weight lifter. Ironically, in a tongue-in-cheek way, he once quipped that he didn't understand why people tried to be all healthy like when they were young just so they could live a few years longer at the end of their lives. He said, these people that spend their younger lives working out are missing out on other more interesting things they could be doing just so they could perhaps extend their older lives where they are too old to do anything interesting. Instead they engage in knitting or playing bingo or doddering around the house straightening up the kitsch and trinkets on their counter tops.

Interesting boating story. Gary, it is most useful, when comparing the dangers of mountain climbing to other activities, to only compare it to activities that folks choose to do, ostensibly for recreation. So driving to work isn't a fair comparison. But motorcrossing is a fair comparison activity. Or power boating. Or resort skiing. It would be interesting to see those kind of statistics.

[TR] Fawn Peak FKT - Fastest Known Time - North Ri
klenke replied to klenke's topic in North Cascades
I'm lampooning more than one CC poster in my TR, by the way. cbcbd: I already lampooned you elsewhere. -
Trip: Fawn Peak FKT - Fastest Known Time - North Ridge from Banker Pass Date: 8/8/2009 Trip Report: …thump thump thump thump thump thump thump thump :chestbeater: They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. True. And lampooning is the insincerest form of flattery. Also true. Senator Poopy Head and I climbed Fawn Peak (6577 ft) east of Mazama last weekend and thereby claim the FKT (Fastest Known Time) of this mountain: 1:46:36. We had to deal with more adversity than we bargained for but in the end the summit was attained in short order. We looked out on smoky skies and over at a lot of bigger peaks I’ve climbed where I don’t have the FKT, not that I care. Location (Elevation): Time Elapsed* / Split* / Real Time Banker Pass car (4,640 ft): 0 / 0 / 11:30 Poopy Head cow manure perfume application (4,640 ft) 00:00:07 / 00:00:07 / 11:30 First wrong turn (4,700 ft): 00:05:12 / 00:05:05 / 11:35 Realization of first wrong turn (4,780 ft): 00:09:45 / 00:04:33 / 11:39 Back at first wrong turn (4,700 ft): 00:14:01 / 00:04:46 / 11:44 End of correct road (4,900 ft): 00:20:16 / 00:06:15 / 11:50 Where Poopy Head first peed (4,980 ft): 00:22:55 / 00:02:39 / 11:52 Where wife wisened up to this charade (5,290 ft): 00:30:00 / 00:07:05 / 12:00 Where Poopy Head pooped (5,400 ft): 00:38:19 / 00:08:19 / 12:08 Where I passed gas (5,490 ft): 00:42:50 / 00:04:31 / 12:12 Where I first scratched my arm on a tree (5,560 ft): 00:45:34 / 00:02:44 / 12:15 Where I first cussed (5,560 ft): 00:45:35 / 00:00:01 / 12:15 Where I found an old trail (5,780 ft): 00:51:15 / 00:05:40 / 12:21 Where I lost that old trail (5,870 ft): 00:53:10 / 00:01:55 / 12:23 Hit the ridge east of the summit (6,240 ft): 00:58:55 / 00:05:45 / 12:28 At the summit cairn (6,577 ft): 01:04:08 / 00:05:13 / 12:34 Sat down on a rock (6,574 ft): 01:05:01 / 00:01:53 / 12:35 Picked my nose (6,574 ft): 01:05:22 / 00:00:21 / 12:35 First summit photo snap (6,570 ft): 01:10:45 / 00:05:23 / 12:40 Last summit photo snap (6,576 ft): 01:12:58 / 00:02:13 / 12:42 Left the summit clearing: (6,569 ft): 01:14:06 / 00:01:08 / 12:44 Where I tripped over my insular wit (6,200 ft): 01:17:19 / 00:03:13 / 12:47 Where I landed on my funny bone (6,200 ft): 01:17:21 / 00:00:02 / 12:47 Where I came up with the idea for this TR (6,200 ft): 01:17:23 / 00:00:02 / 12:47 Back at Poopy Head’s poop (5,400 ft): 01:28:44 / 00:11:21 / 12:58 Back at the end of the correct road (4,900 ft): 01:34:02 / 00:08:18 / 13:04 Back to the bored wife in the car (4,640 ft): 01:46:36 / 00:13:34 / 13:16 The tasty beer down my throat (4,640 ft): 01:47:59 / 00:01:23 / 13:17 * times given down to the nearest second because it’s, you know, like, competition swimming ’n all. It could mean the difference between the FKT and the almost FKT. As usual, I've posted a full trip report with lots of photos on my website: Klenke's playpen Here is the view of Fawn Peak from the north (from Sweetgrass Butte): Senator Poopy Head and her cow manure perfume: We started out from Banker Pass just downhill from the road on a spur landing behind a barbed-wire gate. Wife Michelle joined us initially but the wisdom she has gained from one-too-many outings with me allowed her to see the Fawn flora for what it was: nothing fun to fawn over… So I carried on with just Poopy Head. We ran into an odd swath of downed trees lined up parallel like a puncheon road. The “road” extended in a serpentine fashion all the way up the lower north ridge from about 5000 ft to 5800 ft. This road is even visible on the satellite photo. It was an easy landmark to keep track of in the woods but for the ascent it was a rather obnoxious steeple chase. So I generally kept to its east side. The brush beside the puncheon road was not that great. Then I ran into even brushier stuff where the ridge steepens. I did find an old trail (cut logs on either side being the giveaway) but I promptly lost it. But, before I knew it, I was on top. The forest fire smoke butting up the east side of the Cascades really hampered my viewing pleasure. Here’s the Gardner Massif and Silver Star Mountain (and a tapeworm streak of the North Cascades Highway) out to the southwest: To the WNW rises the bulky Goat Peak (hircine mother of Goat Wall at its base) with its lookout atop. At right in the distance is the Robinson Mountain massif: But I couldn’t stay forever. I had an FKT to make sure I achieved. So back down I went with Poopy Head. We again encountered the puncheon road. On the downhill it was a little easier to steeple chase it: Again, here is the link to the full trip report with lots of photos on my website: Klenke's playpen In addition to pointing out my website twice in one TR, I’ve also cross-posted this TR on NWHikers and Summitpost so that I can maximize the self-aggrandizement. For the record, it’s not enough that I record my record for the record. I need there to be no uncertainty whatsoever that everyone everywhere forever knows. Useless information: beer at the car; heck, take one to the summit if you want (if you can overcome the weight penalty), camera (because it’s important to take lots of photos while attempting to do something as fast as possible) Really useless information: I’d like to say that the only reason I climbed this peak is because it resides on the Washington Top 200 by prominence, a list no one has finished and one that John Roper and I are planning to finish at the same time on the same summit (probably in 2011). But, truth be told, that’s not the only reason I climbed this peak. I also climbed it because I can. :chestbeater: You won’t climb it because you don’t. Oh yeah, I almost forgot that in case you forgot, the full trip report with lots of photos on my website: Klenke's playpen Here's the penultimate parting shot. Fawn (back left) and Goat Peak from the northwest (from Slate Peak) the next day: Ultimate parting shot:

However, I will add that, if its rock is anything like the rock encountered on White Rock, I would expect it to be quite nice for climbing. White Rock has horizontal slab exposures that obviously got that way by glacier action.
-
I don't have any details to offer but I did take this photograph of Whitestone Mountain from White Rock, which is about five miles NNW of Whitestone, on June 28, 2009. Click on the image to see it in full size (or the biggest size CC.com will offer).

How'sthis: WTF? & STFU

Thanks for the link, Pax. Interesting (but not unexpected). Having been to California more than a few times in the last three years, I can attest to the lameness of urban sprawl for purposes of walking to destinations. What's really ironic is the fact that I read through the report while eating Pringles...out of a super-size can...while slouched at my computer.

I imagine it was a school policy therefore... If the policy states no "riding" the bike to school, simply ride the bike to the edge of school property then get off and push it the rest of the way to the bike rack. What if you bring your kid to school in your car and happen to have your kid's bike on a rack on the car? Can the school confiscate the bike? Scenarios scenarios. And then, and then.... Huh huh Huh-choooo!

Regarding the summitpost description, well, nobody's perfect. I wrote that up five years ago so I can't tell you now how spot on it was. Maybe the mountain has rearranged itself since then. More likely Steven losing his way was a combination of me being a gumby route writer and him being a gumby climber. I'm also a gumby climber. But that's beside the point.

Whew, thank god he only went bat shit. If he had gone ape shit, he might have hit and knocked down the Smith Tower. It started in a Home Depot. He probably got tired of waiting FOREVER in the returns line.

One day I will treat my wife to KFC. One day. Sigh.

"One fighter climbed into the lion enclosure but was immediately killed by Marjan, the zoo's most famous inhabitant. The man's brother returned the next day and lobbed a hand grenade at the lion leaving him toothless and blind." This paragraph is quite telling about something about these people, isn't it?

Story about the darker side of the Prius in last week's Seattle Weekly: The Flip Side of the Perfect Prius Unintended acceleration, brakes that don't work when pedal pressed, denial by Toyota that something's wrong with the car....

I remember having lunch with you at Red Mill but I don't remember the oogling stuff. What is "oogling" anyway?

Yeah, I guess I should have known it was a foolish idea to try and apply science to Spray. Maybe it was because "Thinker" started this thread that I had the idea in the first place. I have other Spray-worthy opinions as to why the Spray hose has developed a kink in it that are not based on research, just my gut feeling. But...nah, forget it.

I agree with Ivan about the redhead. I also agree with him about the commercial frequency--but then that's a problem for just about all TV these days. I'm not a show watcher so I invariably find myself surfing around for something interesting and I'll be damned if it aint always a commercial wherever I turn to. The Mythbusters Method should not be confused with the Scientific Method for every experiment they run. When they do an experiment and confirm the myth, usually by successfully demonstrating the myth, then you only need one success. Just one success is confirmation of the myth. However, when their experiment does not result in confirmation they all too quickly say "busted." But often I've found their method or their repeatability or their assumptions weren't adequate to positively rule the myth out.

An interesting study to do would be to correlate the posts (particularly in Spray) with the registration date of said posters over, say, the last few years. Maybe it will show that the old guard has dwindled and has been replaced by a new guard (this sort of seems like an obvious trend for all "active" message boards). If you then also show the total number of posts (in Spray) in that same time frame, what would we see? Porter, you are da-programmin' man now. Can you do such a study? Maybe if we just saw the post count in Spray that would be something to start with. I know I've seen this kind of statistic posted before (but it's been a few years).

I guess I'll see you in the Prius lane. That's the slow lane, farthest to the right. If I got a hundred dollars for every hypermiling Prius I've got caught behind whilst in the slow lane waiting for the next exit to hurry up and come, I'd have made enough money to buy your next set of batteries. You've probably rowed your boat faster.

Quite honestly, I can see doing the event next Tuesday instead (March 24). Aaaaaaaaaargh, matey, it looks like the Pillagers Pub is now open (as of last weekend, I guess): source I'll have to check it out with Michelle this week.
-
Michelle and I will come and put a party patina on the gate. We've never been there. It should have table seating for a pub club (not just booth seating). I agree with Jens about Prost. It's too small for a pub club. M&I have been waiting for a new pirate-themed pub called Pillagers to open up at 86th and Greenwood where the Tully's used to be, across the street from Naked City Grill. Aaaaaaaaaaargh!

Remember when the idea was that a bonus was given to you when you did something well, when you did something over and above what was expected of you? A contractual obligation to pay out a bonus, as is apparently the case with AIG, sounds more like an entitlement than an exception. Furthermore, wouldn't one assume that any contract set up for paying out a bonus a year in the future (as is the case here with AIG where the contract was set up in early 2008) would have in it provisos for positive targets to have been met when it comes time for said bonuses to be paid out? Without that, there is no incentive to do good work, much less exceptional work? Give me a break!

Will you beta test for me, Porter?
