Freakin' Fossil-Rockin'!!! THis rulez!
willstrickland replied to RuMR's topic in Rock Climbing Forum
Met two 50+ year old dudes in the desert a few years ago who were still onsighting 5.12 cracks... -
I've got Lambone's old pair, I like 'em alot. Good for exactly what you describe...all arounder that can handle whatever you want to throw at them. Simple, functional, and cheap. Unless you've got money to burn, or are climbing strictly difficult water ice or mixed, I don't see why you'd need any more tool than this. I'd love a pair of Cobras, but I'm not shelling out the loot for them...not until those college loans are paid off anyway.

I read this recently in another magazine...Harpers or something..can't remember. Really a sad state of affairs, hopefully the publicity will help him. Living in a fucking airport would make me insane in short order too!

Well, a mix of metal halides for growth and hps for flowering works well. If heat and/or ballast noise are a concern you can get 48" fluorescent tubes that are full spectrum for about $12 each and have blue/red in one source. I'm not referring to the "plant growth" bulbs which are usually really pricey and put out less light, but rather the phillips or GE plain old "full spectrum". Of couse it would take a bank of about 6 or 8 of those tubes to put out the same light as a 400w. Another way is to use a bank of fluorescents with alternating bluish and reddish bulbs, ex: warm white(redder) and daylight or cool white (bluer). What the manufacturers call a "daylight" bulb is not even close to real daylight...their bulbs are around 6500k...the photographic std for "daylight" i.e. how films are rated, the light temp for lightboxes, is 5000k. Now that's thread drift.

Catbird, You know it's getting to you when the day you're most looking forward to is Dec 22nd. It's marked prominently on my calendar. The upside is, the sun is always so low in the sky that when it is daylight, the light is that sweet golden "photographers light" that most folks only get during the first and last hour of the day. And with all the ice crystals in the air you get some cool atmospheric phenomena like the 21 degree halos around the sun...which combined with a sunset make for some nice views from my desk.

Here's a couple of shots from each side off summitpost...not the best but gives you an idea anyway.

Yeah Pete, I can "here" it too: "Oh Will, we beg of you, please lay your infinite wisdom upon us, so that we might see the light" Trask, three words: pot kettle black. Mr. E, It's amazing how those 400w HPS lights simulate the sun. Add the right greenery and it feels like a tropical island...Jamaica. We had right at 4hrs sun today. Amazing sunset from my office window at 2:45pm.

The environmental organization is charged with "sailor mongering," an obscure 1872 antipiracy law ARRRRR!!!!

Credentials don't mean squat Pete...take Mr. Shrub for example, he's got dick for credentials and he's the Prez And my hoops team can beat your hoops team I gave you stats from an unbiased source re: the election. And I do believe that my EXPERIENCE as an environmental engineer in the regulatory field has bearing on my ability to assess the value of an administration's environmental policy. College chestbeating was an offtopic ramble/spray against cracked. I think O'Reilly might be coming on soon, you better go turn on the tele. Oh yeah, Rupert Murdoch called and asked what was keeping you....said to tell you it's time for you to get back to slobbering on his sack. Buh Bye now shillboy

Exactly, we didn't have "minor" per-se, but most schools do and it only confuses people to try to explain how you could essentially minor by getting a certif, but it wasn't required. I took something like 22 credits of Econ. Fuckin E-Mag and DiffEqs baby! Super weedout classes. Every math TA spoke about 3 words of english and with horrible accents. Guy to girl ratio of 7:1. You could smell the Varsity restaurant from campus. Junior's Grill! The North Ave bum-toll bridge! Steam whistle for class changes. Creepy ass third street tunnel...never knew what you'd find in there. Walking up the hill everyday and that stupid ass Mickey Mouse clock on the Skiles Bldg. I was back on campus about 5 months ago...scary how it's changed.

Pete, you're a right-wing shill. I work in ennvironmental protection and regulation, 5 years at US EPA Region IV in CWA NPDES Enforcement, currently with US Army Corp of Engineers Regulatory Office (404 Wetlands issues/permitting & Sec 10 work in navigable waterways,). To posture as if Bush has done some great service to the environment is absurd even for you. We could get into a long debate about the whole credits system, the history of the CAA, and the intention of credits / why credits came to be in the first place, but I'd rather do actual work on the environment than argue with you about it.

Damn! 118 reviews? Mostly funny, but a bit repetitive. And what's with these new bands who call themselves punk? They're about as punk as the Monkees. I saw a personals add in the paper in Fairbanks the other day, I'll post that shizz if I can find it. I had tears rolling reading this thing....

What to do for "climber's elbow/arm"??
willstrickland replied to maryk's topic in Fitness and Nutrition Forum
Glassgowkiss might be your best bet for good info on this condition...and there are some MDs on this site as well. You might PM him directly, if he doesn't scare you off with his spray-rage, he's probably got good input due to his line of work. -
Actually, I'd say that was knowing how fucking hard that school was and that anyone who could get through it in good fashion could certainly handle any of the job requirements easily. I'm not talking flag waving, football fan fantics in the alumni association. Either way, I got the job

I was looking for a way to get those bball and football rankings in there, bury them in other education stats...works everytime. Besides, I don't even know which nursery school the young lad attends...wherever the headstart bus stops I guess. BTW Iain, you're hiring for a position. Both candidates are equally matched in every way, same GPA, same experience, hell they're even physical twins with the same outside interests....except one went to Dumbfuck U and one was edumacated at MIT....who you gonna hire....umm yeah. I got a job in OR once in large part because the board had 4 of 8 members who had done either their undergrad or grad work at GT. Where'd you got to school Iain?

A whole safe full of 'em. My stepdad collects Win Mod 37 single shot shotguns, probably have 15 of those. Some old Browning A5 "Sweet Sixteen" shotguns that I love, and some .12 ga A5s. An old Fox side by side doublebarrel. An ancient single shot breach action .22 that my grandpa had. A 1911 .45 from the war years. My Remington Mod 600 .243, only made a few years, pretty rare, very compact and light...great weapon for deer in heavy timber. I'd love to have an old Daley. The neighbor where I grew up had some SWEET Weatherby bolt actions in a few calibers from .223 to .300 weath mag. Gorgeous guns. And, of course, the Smith & Wesson bolt action .7mm mag from my uncle. Only made those a few years too.

Son, my minor at Georgia Tech was economics. That's GT, one of the best schools in the nation, consistently ranked in the top 25-30 schools overall, top 10 engineering schools, top values in education, and top graduate programs ...and top 25 in football and basketball, after recently crushing the #1 ranked UConn in hoops and bowl bound with a true freshman quarterback Now get back to your books little man and when you get out of sophomore year and beyond Keynes and aggregate demand equations, come back and talk to us.

You should know something about labor stats: You are only classified "unemployed" if you are actively seeking work. If you've realized after two fruitless years that there's no where else to look until the economic picture changes, you are technically not "unemployed". Some labor stats also use unemployment claims as a basis of calculation. So if your unemployment benefits run out, you're not taken into account. I often hear reports that "unemployment claims are down for the last two quarters.." Well NO SHIT, people have exhausted their benefits and still don't have a job...they CAN'T file a claim. If the economic situation stays the same, claims will eventually go down without any change in unemployed people.

Hetch hetchy, Yosemite's lost valley
willstrickland replied to lancegranite's topic in Climber's Board
Erik, I've only see a few topos for some routes over there. I've never seen any guide or anything. Micro should know, or work with someone who knows anyway. Those cats prolly got a secret stash of old school guides and private topos n stuff. -
This seems to be the most relevant stat I see. Economic growth on paper doesn't mean jack to the people still out of work. While economists will point out that 5.6% is really not that high (some even place the natural rate around 5%) the fact that it's been much lower for a decade or more will influence the perception of the man in the street. Don't start celebrating yet Pete, we've got a long way to go. And it looks like Dean might be ordained well before the primaries are in full swing, allowing less in-party squabbling and more time to focus on beating the Shrub. I'm in AK, where Bush will clean house, so I'm voting my conscious...Libertarian for Pres and Greens for local posts (because they have a real chance here).

Hetch hetchy, Yosemite's lost valley
willstrickland replied to lancegranite's topic in Climber's Board
I was referring to access to the sub-valley south of Yos Valley that's visible from the south rim, not access to the HH valley. -
Hetch hetchy, Yosemite's lost valley
willstrickland replied to lancegranite's topic in Climber's Board
Hetch Hetchy is actually north of the ditch. You don't even have to go that far...top out on a Upper Cathedral, Leaning Tower, or Sentinel route sometime and just look south. There's shit-tons of untouched rock over there, just no quick access like the valley proper. You'd have to hike over a pass somewhere on the south rim, but you'd have a choice of FA plums. -
OK Pete, I'm bored at work so here's some data to chew on. (Source for my raw data is USElectionsAtlas.ORG) This is all in ref to the presidential election. I'm rounding decimals in most places In 2000 the Republican had 26 states with over 50% of the vote, and 7 of those states voted 60% or greater Republican (WY, ND, SD, ID, NE, OK, UT). Peak was WY at 67.7% Republican. In 2000 the Democrat had 15 states with over 50% of the vote, and 4 of those voted 60% or greater Democrat. Peak was DC with 85% Democrat. I'd call anything above 55% decisive. The total electoral votes for these "decisive" states was: Republican 146 Democrat 114 Keep in mind though, that a state was won (OR) with as little as 46% of the vote. Green Party recieved as much as 10% (AK) and had 11 states with 5% or more. Green Party will not be a factor in this election. Liberal greens got burned by the election fiasco and there's dissent within the party of whether Nader or David Cobb should represent the party due to the "draw off" factor. Nader will draw off votes and Cobb wants to focus on building the grass roots level of the party. Look for the Greens to go Dem (duh). Without Nader the results would have likely only been different in 2 states (operating under the assumption that 60% or more of the greens would have voted dem instead). Those 2 were FL, and NH with a total of 29 electoral votes. The closest race states were top to bottom: Florida , New Mexico, Wisconsin, Iowa, OREGON, New Hampshire, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Nevada. Of those states, the real players (by electoral votes)are: FL-25, OH-21, MO-11, WI-11, MN-10 The higest percent difference in those 10 states was 3.5%, total electoral votes up for grabs in those 10 was 105 out of a total of 538 possible electoral votes. I was erroneous in stating the turnout was < 50%. Turnout of the voting age populus was right at 50%, but turnout of registered voters was 67%. In Wyoming, 99.25% of the registered voters turned out. In OK, only 55%. It's gonna be a for about 10 states.
