There's a lot of info out there. In addition to being nasty in the particulate matter department, the production of diesel fuel uses 25% more energy--virtually all of the energy per mile you gain while driving isn't real. Also keep in mind that there is a NASA study currently underway that may end up placing a lot of the blame for glacial recession on albedo decreases caused by soot. Passat TDI has the same engine capacity as regular Passat. The only reason these cars get better gas mileage is not some superior drive train efficiency, but energy content in diesel fuel vs regular gasoline (which is close to twice). Popularity of diesel in Europe is due to the price point of diesel, which is cheaper. In the US diesel is only slightly cheaper, and the pollution created by diesel is much worst then pollution created by gasoline. Going towards natural gas/propane systems would make much more sense. Propane/Gas would indeed. But this is rated 9 out of 10 stars for reliability (96 ONLY). And 54mpg means I burn 1/2 as much fuel as the 25 mpg vehicle that opened this thread. Are you saying that deisel pollutes twice as bad as regular unleaded? It's over 20 times worse.

Why do the vast majority of Jews vote for Democrats? Why do Hispanic whites split more evenly? Don't know, but I'll bet it has less to do with reality than traditional fictions.

I would point out that while conservatives make at least modest efforts to distance themselves from their own fringe, liberals typically embrace theirs wholeheartedly. Take a look at Obama's "czars" and tell me the fringe isn't running the administration. Van Jones? When did we start letting avowed communists run entire departments sans congressional approval? At least Plumber's and electrician's unions still have a training/apprenticeship program that promotes quality work and pride amongst the membership. If no one else can do the same quality work, then yes, these unions can reasonably extract market prices. My real complaint is with public employee unions or various other unions who's only purpose seems to be extracting blood from the cow until it passes out.
