  1. Rob Cobb and I were doing a traverse of Madsen's Ledge on the upper town wall at Index when Rob turned a corner and startled a nesting falcon that then proceeded to dive bomb him until he had backed away from the nest. That was only a couple hundred feet off the ground and we had no idea the falcon was there so I can see why a falcon on the upper reaches of Snow Creek Wall wouldn't be obvious.

  10. There's always that other option where you make your own skin track instead of enduring one you don't like and then bitching about it on the internet.

    Hard Men

The top pic looks like Harding has a big shoulder pad over his right shoulder (standing next to a hemp rope). Mark Powell's right shoulder looks shredded. In the bottom pic it looks like Warren's got some sort of plastic crotch protector rigged up. Imagine doing all the rappells they did with just a dulfersitz rig. Here's the supertopo thread with more images... http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.html?topic_id=642195

  20. Clarence King! "American geologist and mining engineer who directed the survey of the 40th parallel (1867-78), an intensive study of the mineral resources along the site of the proposed Union Pacific Railroad, recorded in his classic volume, Systematic Geology (1878). This investigative effort included the first discovery of glaciers in the U.S. while studying the extinct volcanoes of Mounts Shasta, Rainier, and Hood. He is credited with introducing the use of contour lines on maps to indicate topographic features. Instrumental in forming the U.S. Geological Survey, he was then appointed its first head (1879-81). He wrote a series of Atlantic Monthly articles on Mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada (1872), marking a transition to popularized climbing sport."
