  7. thelawgoddess said: Quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- jordop said: Okay, I love this bit. Schools should teach only accounting and shop, hisotry and english are useless ... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- wow; you totally missed what he was saying. No, not at all, this is the argument taken by neocons when calling for a school system that better reflects the reality of the woorkplace, that schools teach a whole bunch of useless stuff which does not prepare for the reality of looking for a job. Jordrop you again miss the point entirely. I would ask how Bennet fits into your equation or even a Bloom? I would also ask how institutions like Aquinas fit in? Stop the insanity! Why silence regarding my offer to pay for the first hour of a PC? PP

  9. Jordrop Quote: The sense that those who do not have the tools the economy values will be displaced. The equating of the dog-eat-dog world of the hallway to the greater econmy is laughable: The schools contain another informal social system within classrooms, hallways, and schoolyards, wherein rewards are distributed not by central direction but spontaneously at the pleasure and whim of schoolmates. Here the intellectuals do less well. This is akin to a parent of a bully justifying his behaviour as natural. First I must admit some confusion as to exactly what point you are replying. If it is Darwinism I think you are way off base. And your final sentence involviong justifying behavior is confusing. Again I ask clearly and simply: how is capitalism justified or explained by this essay specifically by Darwinism? Further I would ask how your last sentence makes any sense at all. As far as your friend I am mildly surprised he already doesn't know Nozick as he is a well known writer especially with regard to the book Anarchy, State and Utopia. PP

  11. Jordrop - Reread the first sentence in the third paragraph and it will become appearent that he is not refering to "braniacs" at all. Egads! Please elaborate further on this as well as it seem to be a non sequitor: "I love Darwinian justifications and explanations for capitalism. They're so neat and tidy " PP
  12. OK Jordrop what % of Anthropology PHDs get good jobs in private industry? I think he would be in complete agreement that there are smart types in private industry. PP

  20. I think that this contains the seeds a much more significant explanation for people such as Mr. Atta than merely saying Holy War: T Sowell summarizing a portion of Eric Hoffer’s book The True Believer Contrary to the prevailing assumptions of his time, Eric Hoffer did not believe that revolutionary movements were based on the sufferings of the downtrodden. "Where people toil from sunrise to sunset for a bare living, they nurse no grievances and dream no dreams," he said. He had spent years living among such people and being one of them. Hoffer's insights may help explain something that many of us have found very puzzling -- the offspring of wealthy families spending their lives and their inherited money backing radical movements. He said: "Unlimited opportunities can be as potent a cause of frustration as a paucity or lack of opportunities." What can people with inherited fortunes do that is at all commensurate with their unlimited opportunities, much less what their parents or grandparents did to create the fortune in the first place, starting from far fewer opportunities? Like the frustrated artists and failed intellectuals who turn to mass movements for fulfillment, rich heirs cannot win the game of comparison of individual achievements. So they must change the game. As zealots for radical movements, they often attack the very things that made their own good fortune possible, as well as undermining the freedom and well-being of other people. PP
