Actually there are some catalysts in prototype that will get you hydrogen direct from methane or ethanol or whatever with no need for electricity. Also its a lot easier to store hydrogen than it is to store electricity. So you can have a solar cell that wouldn't itself be able to power a car making hydrogen, then fill up a car and run it off the stored hydrogen that solar cell made.
