JDCH Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Howdy- So I'm going to the Ruth for 10 days in April, and was planning on doing some sled hauling while there. That being said, have people flown with their sleds? Bought them in AK? Thoughts? Quote
DPS Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 We grabbed a couple that were in a pile in the hangar in Talkeetna. I don't recall seeing a stash at the Mountain House like there is at KIA. Quote
ScaredSilly Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I have never been sled user, instead using drag bags. A good source for a bag is your local home brew shop. The 25 kilo sacs for grain make excellent drag bags. They are also great bags for dumping stuff into around camp. Quote
montypiton Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 back in the '80s we bought sleds in Anchorage. these days I would be very surprised if they are not available in Talkeetna. Quote
DPS Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Call your air taxi and ask them about sled availability. If there is not a stash at the Mountain House, I'm sure they could scrounge some up for you. FWIW, I found dragging sleds up and down the Ruth Gorge to be pretty straight forward, easier than on the West Buttrash of Denali. You really don't need anything fancier than the free kiddie sleds the air taxis supply. Quote
Peter Way Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 Just get the cheapest plastic sled there is. Type of thing you would get for your kids. Cheap, light, slides easy, durable enough for 10 days. Whoever fly's you in will probably have a pile of them laying around, give them a call. Quote
christophbenells Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 there are piles of them in the hangers at the air services. they will let you use them for no charge if they're nice (sheldon air service) or charge you $15 to rent it if they're cheap (TAT [of course tat has to pay for that fancy radar tech somehow], K2) Quote
genepires Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 Whatever you do, bring the supplies to trick it out for easier travel. Also know how to load the sled so it travels nicely. Like where is best to pack the cooler and the hard liquor? Simple google search will show plenty of good info on both of these things. You shouldn't need rigid poles to connect you to your sled. A simple sling around the pack connected to some cord going to sled is fine Quote
