sketchfest Posted January 2, 2003 Posted January 2, 2003 (edited) Other than the South side of Hood, what other routes are(relatively) safe to climb on Hood shortly after or even during all this snow fall? Are there any? Or how bout other Oregon peaks? Edited January 2, 2003 by sketchfest Quote
Alex Posted January 3, 2003 Posted January 3, 2003 I dont think Hood is a very safe place to be during or immediately after a storm. Every slope (even the Hosback up to Pearly Gates on SS - saw a 10ft fracture crown there once) is an avalanche waiting to happen, and visibility is very poor. Give it a few days after bad weather for slopes to slide or to settle and consolidate. That said, I've climbed both the Reid and Sandy Headwall in winter and both were very enjoyable - no crowds, interesting climbing, good views. Quote
rbw1966 Posted January 3, 2003 Posted January 3, 2003 Ditto on what Alex said. I have a friend who rode a slide out on TDH mountain. I've triggered some tiny slabs on Hood myself. Don't be messin' with avy danger on Hood. Any route on Hood can be climbed in winter conditions, some are even safer at that time. Depends on cajones and experience. I've climbed the lower portion of Yocum, Sandy, SS, and Leutholds in winter conditions. I prefer Hood with snow as opposed to without. Jefferson is rumored to be pretty cool in winter but a longer time committment. Close to Portland, Mt. St. Helens is pretty fun in winter. Rob Quote
sketchfest Posted January 3, 2003 Author Posted January 3, 2003 Yeah, I know, patience, patience, patience! I'm just going crazy to get out, I should know better Helen's is a good ski, but since I just broke one of my bindings and got no spare benjamin's I wont be skiing for a little while. Quote
MtnHigh Posted January 3, 2003 Posted January 3, 2003 Yo Sketch chill. Park it back in the barn. As the Brothers said above, ain't nothing safe to climb on that hill in these conditions. All the junkies are jonesin. You're not alone in this dilemma. To ease the pain take continuous bong hits interspersed by copious amounts of alcohol. I'll be at Paddy's downtown after work taking my medicine. Stop by. Quote
wdietsch Posted January 3, 2003 Posted January 3, 2003 All the junkies are jonesin. You're not alone in this dilemma. How about a "Dry Tool Festival" at Beacon Rock? Quote
rbw1966 Posted January 3, 2003 Posted January 3, 2003 I doubt its very dry there. Rain tooling perhaps? Quote
rbw1966 Posted January 3, 2003 Posted January 3, 2003 I'll pass by to see if you hosers are there. Quote
sketchfest Posted January 4, 2003 Author Posted January 4, 2003 Aaahhh MtnHigh you are truly a sage, bring on the Quote
MtnHigh Posted January 4, 2003 Posted January 4, 2003 Should be another Bowl game blow out tonight....or just a bowl blow out. Either way the Canes rule and PDX climbers rock. Quote
MtnHigh Posted January 4, 2003 Posted January 4, 2003 Shred come on down to ole downtown. The stories are better and the drink flows faster in when you're around. Quote
sketchfest Posted January 10, 2003 Author Posted January 10, 2003 Who's got a current photo of Hood, (last few days or so) they'd like to post? Quote
sketchfest Posted January 10, 2003 Author Posted January 10, 2003 By then, you can look at mine, tough guy. When are you heading up? Skiing or climbing? Quote
b-rock Posted January 10, 2003 Posted January 10, 2003 Morningish, to play with my new AT setup, word. Quote
iain Posted January 10, 2003 Posted January 10, 2003 Might see you guys up there as I tour the southside once again, that is, if the epoxy on my Tuas sets correctly. Hope snow conditions are as good as they were last Sunday. Quote
Winter Posted January 10, 2003 Posted January 10, 2003 B - what kind of setup did you get? I'm lookin' for a new pair of affordable skis. Quote
b-rock Posted January 10, 2003 Posted January 10, 2003 Lazers, Tri-Steps, and K2 Shuksans. Got the boots and bindings from Telemark-Pyrenees (thumbs up!) and the skis from OMC. Not really affordable, but the boots were a gift. Paid my dues last year on Trekkers, so I'm pretty psyched... Quote
ChrisT Posted January 10, 2003 Posted January 10, 2003 Who's got a current photo of Hood, (last few days or so) they'd like to post? well its' not the best but I took this about 10 minutes ago... "only mad dogs and englishmen go out in the mid day sun" Quote

MtnHigh Posted January 11, 2003 Posted January 11, 2003 Hope we all get in our fun before the shit starts coming down Saturday. Five of us are heading up pre-dawn Sat to explore an E Rim gulley. Hoo-Yaa, I love that mountain. Quote
Sabertooth Posted January 12, 2003 Posted January 12, 2003 MtnHigh, nice gulley climb on Saturday morning. Saw you guys at the summit. I took a picture of your team on the route. Let me know if you want it. Anyone have any updated information on the climbers that had to dig a snow cave to survive last night? Quote
