My 15 year old Rambos have finally been filed flat and my boot toe isn't doing a very good job of sticking in the ice. I haven't been watching the crampon evolution at all and need some advice on the best steep ice/ mixed crampon available. I won't lie, the mixed bit is really just a desire. Up until now the idea of flailing ice gear on manky Rockies protection, has limited me to mainly ice routes. So what would you suggest for a great steep ice crampon and ok mixed crampon?

I can't say enough about my Rambo 4's. I climbed ice on them last year and they made me very confident - way better than non-ice focused Sabretooths I used the year before.

Excellent crampons. Steep price ($235 just about everywhere).

You should check out Dane's site... he does a good job of reviewing crampon tech:

I have a new personal definition of "best", it is the Petzl Lynx. I have yet to publish that specific review as to why.

New Ranbo IV is good though no doubt, just too heavy imo. If weight is no concern there is likely nothing better for step technical terrain than the Rambo.

Dartwin is still one of my go to crampons for everything/ any terrain or difficulty. But if buying new I would buy the Lynx. Lynx is not the lightest crampon around but likely the best all around crampon for any terrain that we as consumers have seen in a LONG time.

Rambo 4's are amazing if weight is not an issue.

They really are in a class all their own for hard cragging. Cyborgs/G14s/Terminators/Darts are a little more versatile, but fall short in terms of pure climbing performance.
