ScaredSilly Posted October 4, 2010 Posted October 4, 2010 Not sure what to think about this renaming ... but it is a done deal as I doubt the bill will be vetoed: http://ktna.org/2010/09/30/peak-on-mt-hunter-named-after-ted-stevens Quote
olyclimber Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 Renaming Gravina Island Bridge to Steven's Bridge would have been more appropriate Quote
WCC Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 Uh, there isn't a Gravina Island Bridge. I think it should remain the South Peak of Mount Hunter. No need to rename it. Quote
olyclimber Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 I know there isn't , and I agree the name shouldn't change. of course people put names on mountains, and they don't always stick (eg Denali vs. McKinley) Quote
kukuzka1 Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 ya admrl. rainier never even saw the mountain. I think we should name all the cascade volcanos by their indian name. that would sure be a big honor to the local native indians. so the north peak is still hunter? Quote
WCC Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 The north peak is still Mount Hunter, but the name of the Middle Summit of Mount Hunter would sound rather odd without a South Peak of Mount Hunter. Quote
wfinley Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 The north peak is still Mount Hunter, but the name of the Middle Summit of Mount Hunter would sound rather odd without a South Peak of Mount Hunter. What is the North Peak of Denali named? And why didn't Mur-kow-ski (sp?) propose that? Quote
WCC Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 I don't think the North Peak of Mount McKinley has an offical name. There is a lot wrong about that press release - the South Peak of Mount Hunter is not the highest unnamed peak in Alaska (some would say it already has a name, but if we're only to consider official names, the North Peak of Mount McKinley is more than a mile higher than the South Peak of Mount Hunter and doesn't have an offical name), the summit elevation of the South Peak of Mount Hunter is 13966 feet (not 13895 feet), etc. Quote
wfinley Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 WC - You should call the AP staff and have them put you down as a reference for future fact checking! Quote
ScaredSilly Posted October 8, 2010 Author Posted October 8, 2010 Quiet now, don't be giving those knucleheads any ideas about any other peaks. Quote
