Tips for freezing Stainless steel water bottles

Place I go has a spring coming out of the side of the mountain. When my knees are co-operating I load up on water and freeze it for later consumption. My first SS water bottles suggested that I give a little more room for expansion than the poly bottles needed.

For either steel or plastic, volume ice = 1.10 * volume of water.

 

So for a 1 litre bottle, filling it 900 mL full of water should make 990 ML of ice or basically full without exerting extra pressure.

 

Even a 1L plastic bottle entirely full of water can break if you freeze it.

 

But really, basalt doesn't offer a lot of filtration. Springs in basalt = drinking untreated surface water.

I've got an idea for how you could thaw those things....

This one way to freeze the bottle, and will improve the taste:

 

* fill most of way with ice (glacial ice works)

* add generous amount of good gin and a touch of vermouth

* with lid on, shake hard for 5-10 seconds

* while holding bottle so ice stays in, pour liquid into your favorite glass or cup

 

The bottle will have a layer of ice on the outside and the liquid will be frothy. Taste is not only improved, but attitude as well.

 

I just did the above, but remembered too late I have a med appt tomorrow morning with a prereq I can't drink alcohol 24 hrs prior--no one to share with so almost all went to waste...

My son assures me that the chemistry and inertness of stainless steel means these are safe to drink out of, but my suspicions on the taste which develops after a few days means that you aren't getting pure water, but water which may have chromium and nickel leaching into it.

 

...not that there is anything wrong with that.....guess we're all gonna die at some point. The Romans who were rich way back when and had money got the best they could afford as well. Lead pipes and storage vessels. You should all know how that worked out.

Thanks for the info. I bring along dry gatorade or other energy drink mix not just for the energy boost but to mask the flavors of the water, both for stainless and plastic bottles.

Better than Gatoraid: it's the Paul Newmans "Newmans Own" empty Grape juice bottles for the large sizes but the Stainless packs and fits into the little spots in the freezer.
