jesselillis Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Looking for recommendations for (or against) specific ropes. Use will be primarily sport climbing and top roping. I don't take a lot of falls, but when I do, I prefer they be longer and softer. While I said 'beater', I'm thinking 9.5-9.8, 60meters. Thanks Quote
rocky_joe Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Petzl Nomad. They're 9.8 is a good deal for the money, and I'm fairly sure it has a high UIAA fall rating relative to comparable ropes. Quote
ryanb Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Watch the cheap rope thread, buy cheap buy often: http://cascadeclimbers.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/860259/Re_Hot_rope_deal_60#Post860259 Quote
Alpinfox Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Petzl Nomad. They're 9.8 is a good deal for the money I couldn't disagree more. Petzl has just about the most expensive ropes on the market and I wasn't very impressed with the handling of the couple petzls I've had experience with. Petzl also had some quality control issues. I think it was the Nomad that had the sheath that disinigrated after half a day of light use? I think RyanB's advice is good. Quote
hemp22 Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 yeah, i'd stay away from the Petzls...it was the Petzl Zephyr with all the sheaths falling apart, but the other models are still too pricey. if you don't have a brand preference, check spadout.com for deals on 60M ropes in the 9.5-9.9 range. I've heard surprisingly good things about the Mad Rock ropes, and those have a pretty attractive MSRP of $120 for 9.8x60 Quote
hemp22 Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 (edited) um, holy crap...i just wandered onto spadout to follow up on my previous post, and it led me to REI, where I noticed this 60M 9.7mm PMI rope for $60 Edit: which, of course, Billcoe already noticed before me and posted in the cheap rope thread... billcoe Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 They are STILL available for now too. This may be the best rope deal I've seen in the 36 years I've been climbing. Thanks Ryan !! Petzls would be my VERY next to last choice, next to last as in right before I used my momma clothsline. They have quality issues and don't appear to give a crap that their brand new ropes literally just fell apart on several folks in a couple of weeks occasional use. Screw em. Quote
denalidave Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Too bad the 8.5 Mammuts were gone by the time I decided to snag one or two. It was there one minute and gone the next. Thanks for providing this valuable service though. Quote
billcoe Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Thanks for providing this valuable service though. I may be the "Mother Teresa" of gear whores. I got the heads up from RyanB, all praise to him! Quote
G-spotter Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Best ropes I have ever had were Edelrid and Mammut. I had an Edelrid in particular that lasted 9 years of heavy cragging use. Worst rope ever was a Maxim. One season and it was toast. Only rope I have ever owned that had the sheath separate from the core like a cheap shoelace. Quote

Powderhound showed up to climb with me once, and with in a day or 2 of him making that very comment about longevity of Maxim ropes, my 2nd Maxim rope had core shotted from rubbing on a smooth rock while jugging. I'd take the Maxim before the Petzl still. All the major mfg make pretty good stuff. BTW, to the op, bigger is better for longevity. heavier though. 9 seasons eh? Remind me that when we climb together, we'll use my rope ! Quote
G-spotter Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Petzl ropes are just Cousin ropes with the "Petzl" brand name. Cousin ropes are also sold as Millet ropes. http://www.cousin-trestec.com/cords-ropesuk/climbing-ropes/cordes-montagne.php Quote
cheamclimber Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 My Maxim rope actually held up to heavy use quite well... but it did get kinda stiff like a static cord afer a while. Mammut rope IMO handle the nicest and are your best bet... Quote
RuMR Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 i've had good luck with edelrids, mammuts, and edelweiss...edelweiss and mammuts seem expensive... Quote
King Beatard Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Bought a $60 PMI per a gear alert phone call from bill. Used it yesterday and it has a great feel. Thanks Bill for your gear pimpin Quote
