ivan
yeah, Obama's such a socialist holy shit - the tax rate on the upper income tier used to be 94%! this is a good extract from the article: Under the Obama plan, the bottom 20 percent of households in America would get a tax cut of $567, and the middle 20 percent would see their taxes drop by $1,042. But the richest 1 percent of Americans (those earning an average of $1.5 million a year) would see taxes go up by $116,000. Under the McCain plan, the bottom 20 percent would get a $19 tax cut, the middle fifth would get a tax cut of $319, and the wealthiest 1 percent would see their taxes go down by more than $40,000. umm...sounds like a no-brainer for all the po'folk like me - now why can't all the other rednecks dig on this? mattp
Many Americans believe their country remains a land of unbounded opportunity. That perception explains why Americans, much more than Europeans, have tolerated the widening inequality in recent years. It is OK to have ever-greater differences between rich and poor, they seem to believe, as long as their children have a good chance of grasping the brass ring. This continuing belief shapes American politics and economic policy. Technology, globalization and unfettered markets tend to erode wages at the bottom and lift wages at the top. But Americans have elected politicians who oppose using the muscle of government to restrain the forces of widening inequality. These politicians argue that lifting the minimum wage or requiring employers to offer health insurance would do unacceptably large damage to economic growth. Stefan
Owning 80% of AIG makes this country one step towards Socialism. I guess that would make Bush, McCain and Obama have some sort of socialist ideals becuase they all supported the loan to AIG.

So you think the civil war was abot slavery huh? Oh, how cute. Not at all. It is great you envision the northerners as olden day civil rights leaders, but their motives were far more self serving than that.

After he was re-elected, he made policy that was so far from the conservative angle that got him elected it wasn't even funny.

Since the bottom 38% of American income earners pay no federal income tax, I would like to know why the bottom 20% are entitled to anything. Isn't that called welfare? mattp
Fairweather, your source may be using fuzzy math. They pay payroll taxes even if no deduction is taken for "federal income tax." I'm not sure how Obama's proposal will apply to these people, but they DO pay taxes and thus COULD receive a reduction without receiving a cash grant or, as you put it, welfare.
