I never understood the appeal of the term "Maverick" anyway. In the old west it was an unbranded calf that anyone could claim for their own. It was an old TV western where the title character was a gambler and con man. I much prefer the term "loose gun". This is an apt naval term for a cannon that was not tied down rolling all over a ships deck causing major havoc and destruction.

Maverick:

One that refuses to abide by the dictates of or resists adherence to a group; a dissenter.

adj.

Being independent in thought and action or exhibiting such independence: maverick politicians; a maverick decision.

Of course a group think, herd-instinct, lemming, liberal sheeple would see no appeal in this.

Yes, and McCain has repeatedly gone against his own party and pissed off the establishment. That's why he got screwed in his Presidential aspirations in 2000. He's a maverick to the core and will shake up the status quo for the next 4 years.

Okay, if he is a maverick to the core - who would he be picking for his cabinet?

It is not just McCain you are voting for but the whole republican ball of wax!

Lieberman will be in his cabinet. You know, the guy who was on the DEMOCRATIC ticket 8 short years ago. No significance there at all.

The only thing he's shaking up right now is the Christian Right. Praisuhlord!

remember the politician who was the real-life model for the maverick from top gun? the republican who later got taken down for being as venal as he was rebellious?

expecting that from any of the candidates involved is a pipe-dream, uber-true if mccain kicks the bucket while in office

The major policy positions coming from the maverick are exactly what? Let's drill out or own oil reserves, we can win the war in Iraq, and trickle down economics will somehow magically become effectrive? Oh yes: reform. That and the Democrats are responsible for big government. Sure sounds like a maverick to me.

Believe he was reelected in 2006 as an independent: 2/3 Republican and 1/3 democrate. This after loosing the primary to Democrat Ned Lamont. He had great assistance from the governor and the Bush whitehouse.

So, what is the significance??

Yeah, those people clinging to they religion. Go with that message Prole, please do.

I have to say Kojak, it's pretty sad to see that over the last few days you've abandoned any pretense to thinking critically about your chosen candidate's choice of strategy. Certainly many smart people on the Right are discouraged about where this has headed. But I guess being a good foot soldier means "whatever it takes to win" huh?

Let's start with McCain-Finegold. Not a popular thing for McCain to do, and it pissed off his party.

And, Obama, has done what to show he is a leader - especially transcending his own party? What legislation has HE authored?

*crickets*

Are you serious? Gore-Lieberman was 8 short years ago. They lost to W in a bitterly-contested debate. And now Lieberman will likely be on the cabinet of the next R administration? Probably as Secretary of Defence or of State.

Can't figure out why this is important. There are certainly plenty of morons out there "authoring legislation". Remember Tim Eyman?

He is not a leader with any accomplishments. He has absolutely NO track record except winning elections.
