If I were 30 years old is that too old to learn mountaineering and become fairly safe within a few years? Just wondering because i planned on moving out to the pnw this year but circumstances dictate otherwise. Just asking for your 2 cents-is 29/30 too old?

Not even close. I think that there are quite a few folks in their 50s and 60s who have taken up climbing and/or mountaineering and learned the ropes just as quickly, or perhaps even more quickly, than they would have if they'd started when they were in their 20s.

not too old. I'm more than happy to show you the ropes for free. People shouldn't have to pay to learn to climb.

The mountains are no place for commerce.

When you can't drag your old ass out to the outdoors then you done! :mistat:

I was a peak bagger till 40 than the rock took over, Woooo, warm dry rock... balance and grace over stone, dude it's the shit.

Over 50 can still climb 5.11 and hope to at 60, still can get up a snow slog and loose my head in a long hike.

Eat well, have lots of wild sex, hang with a climbing betty, and unless you look in a mirror you won't even realize your old!

buahahahaaaaa spoken by a bunch of old wankers in denial.

dude, if you haven't accepted the fact that by thirty, it's pretty much all downhill in terms of ability to learn, physical abilities, skill acquisition, etc etc, then obviously you live in lalaland.

don't even try.

I was 38 when I started.....
Same here. I was 38 when I started ten years ago. I love climbing.

I'd heard that Stimson Bullit started rock climbing when he was seventy. He could climb 5.10, so they say. He still climbs in his 90's.
