I've got some ancient ropes, exhausted packs and frayed harnesses sitting in my basement. Does anyone know if it's at all possible to recycle this stuff or is it just destine for the landfill?

The ropes can be ussed by people with floating docks (like me).

The packs might be used by homeless people.

I have taken old sleeping bags to Capitol Hill a few times and given them away to some homeless folks. People there were really happy to get them.

The harnesses are trash.

Might also wanna consider giving the ropes away to climbing instruction organizations and/or the Scouts - although definitely not for use as climbing ropes. Cut them up into 12-15 foot lengths so that the students can practice tying their knots with them. Real ropes work way better than practicing yer knots with small-diameter cords, IMO.

you live in the 'ham. Make art out of it.

One possibility - Make a scarecrow and put the harness and pack on. then hang it off some tall structure, all eiger like. Maybe off some building in the square in western. maybe on the chief or the mythical bellingham big wall.
