August 13 -- Pete Absolon Killed in Wind Rivers

Peter Absolon (47) was killed by a trundled rock on Saturday, August 11.

Pete was doing a new route in Leg Lake Cirque in the Southern Wind River Range. He had completed a lead and was anchored about 800 feet up the wall. His partner, Steve Herlihy, had just arrived at the belay. A hiker either threw or pushed the rock off summit plateau 300 feet above. The hiker then looked over the edge and saw the rock hit Pete. A member of the hiking party then dialed 911. The rock hit the back of Pete's helmeted head. He must have died instantly.

Pete's body was flown out Sunday night by a Jenny Lake rescue team led by Renny Jackson.

Pete was an AAC member and a former board member of the American Mountain Guides Association. He was the Director of the National Outdoor Leadership School's largest operation: the Rocky Mountain Branch. He was a long time climber with roots in the East. He cut his teeth at Carderock and worked as a guide at Seneca Rocks before making his way West where he has been extremely active in Sinks Canyon, the Wind Rivers and the Tetons.

Pete leaves a wife, Molly, and daughter, Avery (6).

Pete's family requests that stories about Pete be added to the thread on SuperTopo.

I was on Red in the common weath basin. I took this dude up the scarmble. His first time in the mountains. We get up on top in a big fog cloud and he starts to pitch rocks off the the noth face. (I think it was the north face, the vertical face)

I corrected him in the errors of his ways. He then yells down into the fog "ROCK - SORRY"
