wfinley Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Explain to me why Inuits in Baffin should be held to the same laws as Vancouverites when it comes to subsistence? Quote

Off_White Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Explain to me why Inuits in Baffin should be held to the same laws as Vancouverites when it comes to subsistence? Because they live in the same country? Because bashing baby seals is Canada's biggest embarrassment, and they want to have some standards for the business? Because Inuit live in Vancouver too? Because subsistence is not necessarily tribal in nature? I dunno, you tell me... Quote

jordop Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Baby seals are cute and plentiful. We need some ex-Beatle ex-wives to campaign for the ugly things nearing extinction. Quote

rob Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 I remember a few years back when some tribe in the northwest was going to harvest a few whales. They insisted they had the right to do so, because it was their tradition and their way of life, etc. I remember being surprised that speedboats and explosive harpoons were (apparently) also part of their native american whaling heritage. Go figure. Quote

G-spotter Posted February 27, 2007 Author Posted February 27, 2007 Explain to me why Inuits in Baffin should be held to the same laws as Vancouverites when it comes to subsistence? What Inuits? This is the Newfie Seal Hunt bye! Although I guess it applies to the Inuit too, but they are more likely to spear or shoot an adult seal than to club a pup. "Seal flipper pie is a regional Newfoundland delicacy." "Following international condemnation, Canada prohibits the killing of seal pups less than 12 to 15 days old. 12 to 15 days is the age at which the seal pups are usually weaned and abandined by their mothers." wfinley Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 My mistake; I was unaware of the Newfoundland seal hunt - I thought this was a rant against native hunts which usually consist of pretty low numbers. Here's more info on the seal hunt; pretty f'ked up if you ask me: http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/seal-phoque/faq_e.htm Quote
G-spotter Posted February 27, 2007 Author Posted February 27, 2007 If it was a Metis Buffalo Hunt who would get upset? I hear seals are good eatin. Free range organic seal meat. Yum! Quote
wfinley Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Last year my wife worked with a Native woman who brought in Sea Lion to share one day. My wife refused to eat it and came home spouting obscenities about federal subsistence rights. Quote
catbirdseat Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 If there is one species that is plentiful, it is sea lions. Quote
DirtyHarry Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 I prefer my sea lion lightly seared with just a hint of rosemary and served with a nice chianti. Quote
G-spotter Posted February 27, 2007 Author Posted February 27, 2007 I prefer my cetacean with a moist yet firm blowhole Quote

Go figure. No shit! I have this problem with native hunting special rights as well. In Montana, Idaho, and Washington (probably other states as well, but these are the only ones I have read regs for) they are allowed to hunt when and where other people aren't, and they are allowed to use their 4 wheelers and snowmobiles in areas where everyone else is not allow. This is nostalgia? Come on. Quote
Dechristo Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 wonder if the use of ritualistic drugs has been extended to include meth Quote
archenemy Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 As long as the baby seals don't get hooked, I'm ok with that. Quote
Dechristo Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 basting the seal, after being clubbed, with meth has proven to not be addictive to the baby seal Quote
