archenemy Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 Going home in Index is a pretty fun trip after the floods, so I thought I'd show a quick update. My efforts begin with a well-planned idea to drag my bike through the river so I can avoid walking the last couple of miles in my waders. In my backpack is my cowering dog. We see a cool Kodak moment type photo opportunity and seize the shot The road gets a little funky after a while And then just sorta goes away At this point, my dog starts getting a little freaked out Fortunately, my man doesn't. He decides to take this opportunity to make an FA on a brand new boulder problem That being done, we carry on to where the yellow brick road starts up again Oh, by now, I've ditched the bike and figured that walking a few miles in waders is easier than dragging that fucker through hell and back. Eventually, the water will recede enough to make the bike thing easier. Anyone who wants to come by for a Thanksgiving visit is more than welcome. You'll have to chop some wood though. Quote
Dr_Flush_Amazing Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 Is that the Index-Galena road? Quote
olyclimber Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 next time they shouldn't just build the road right through the river with no bridge like that Quote
Weekend_Climberz Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 Wow! That's impressive. How did the rest of the town hold up. I've heard and seen little from over there. Quote
archenemy Posted November 21, 2006 Author Posted November 21, 2006 Is that the Index-Galena road? yep. There are two 1/5 mile sections washed out like that. There are some cool asphalt edged waterfalls. The salmon are actually spawning now in some of the shallow beds where the road used to be. I'll take some pics if I catch the buggers at it this week. archenemy Posted November 21, 2006 Author Posted November 21, 2006 next time they shouldn't just build the road right through the river with no bridge like that That's a fun spot. This is the slightly longer wading spot But hey, at least it doesn't look like this anymore but be sure to watch your footing here Quote
fenderfour Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 Wow. I saw the signs at the turnoff for Index but I didn't think it was that bad. More rain on the way. Stay safe Quote
olyclimber Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 glad i held off on the river front property i was looking at, i want a place on the river, not in the river Quote
Off_White Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 I love rivers, so much more variable and entertaining than lakes or the Sound, but it'd sure be scary to live on one. It's mostly a question of when, not if. Outrageous pics Arch, thanks for posting those. Glad your abode survived this go round. Here's a pic of a friend of a friend's house on (errr, I mean in) the Cowlitz. It's come off the foundation and is on it's way downstream, a testament to the power of plywood sheathing. Quote
Dechristo Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 looks like he's gonna need a wet/dry shop vac Quote
Peter_Puget Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 I think these pics are several miles east of the town. The town looks pretty good in comparison. Much closer to town the river has cut a channel very close to the road (Index-Galena) which looks, to me at least, like another washout waiting to happen. Quote
Dechristo Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 At this point, my dog starts getting a little freaked out cute dog. looks like he's part wire-haired snaffle Quote
MisterMo Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 glad i held off on the river front property i was looking at, i want a place on the river, not in the river Ah...in my defense the stuff I pointed you at is high, dry, and in one piece. You'd be archy's neighbor though, long wade out to the grocery store. Quote

If you are referring to my pics, they are all taken from the Index Galena road. I have more that are right next to (and still east of) the big bridge into Index that show some incredible tree pile-ups. Quote
rbw1966 Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 The pooch's eyes are priceless. My cousin had a dog that looked like it that would smile on command. Creepy as hell. Quote

archenemy Posted November 26, 2006 Author Posted November 26, 2006 TR: Thankgiving Renegade Thanksgiving in Index is a blast! It snowed, thank heavens. Here we are heading out this morning (note how bouncy and happy Chorizo is by his ears). I scammed my buddy into packing out my board for me The bridge that was not washed away is now covered in snow rather than brown water: The road is dry (Chorizo is still happy) A cool bird points the way; either that or he was frozen in this position: The log pile up from previous pics. Note blue sky--the first I'd seen in a week. Chorizo getting a bit nervous about the next part of the washout walkout More Cascade beauty and destruction Chorizo no longer having fun and that's Thanksgiving in a nutshell Quote
