What about the nose leeches and other parasites that were carried up the mountain by the both of them?? I heard they fried and ate one of Hillary's nose leeches as fuel for the summit bid. Days before Gu Shot eh? (And we all know what girls and guys are 'training' for by swallowing that)

And, what if Mallory and Irvine were first and you are drinking a toast to the Second Ascencionists???????????? OOOOH MUST FIND CAMERA AND TAKE MORE PICTURES OF DEAD BODIES YEAH CLIMBER DEATH PORN!!! Better get some of that West Pole Brand gore tex it lasts longer.

I'll drink for Mallory first, then Hillary. Then, in case I'm wrong, I'll reverse the order. Then I'll slam one for Hornbein, the first American to contribute significantly to the evolution of Everest conquests. Then I'll have one for that joker Jim (F.A.C.M.E.) and his BIG little brother: in the words of a former Leavenworth Alpine Guide, "Never before has one been so celebrated for accomplishing so little." Then, and at this point I'm drinking the cheap stuff, I'll have one for Larry Nielson (F.A.C.M.E.W.O.--first American to climb Mount Everest without O2), and maybe even Sandy Pitman.

June 3, 1950 Maruice Herzog and Louis Lachenal became the first men to summit an 8,000+ meter mountain, Annapurna.

Raise a cheap glass of nasty red table wine in honor of the bad ass Frenchmen.

(coincedentally, June 3, is my daughter Anna's birthday) pretty cool!

speaking of Annapurna, an excellent read is David Robert's "True summit -what really happened on the 1st ascent of annapurna" he dug in to the true story of the expedition, it's a great character study of the frogs involved. herzog comes out more of a jerk than a hero, the way he used Rebuffat, Lachenal, and Terray.
