Toast Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 (edited) As climbers, we have an impact on trails and are often off-trail to get to climbing routes. In short, we impact the land. Here's our chance to give back. The Washington Climbers Coalition in conjunction with the Darrington Ranger District and the Everett Mountaineers will work on Eight Mile Creek Trail, the trail used for access to Green Giant Buttress and Dreamer, Saturday June 3rd. I bet MattP a keg of beer we could get a dozen or more of us off of CC.com to represent the WCC and the climbing community at large to help, a nice show of grass roots support to the land managers that climbers care about access to Darrington Rock. The Everett Mountaineers sponsor this NTD event every year, but it was Matt and the WCC that steered this event to a badly needed project that climbers use. There should be a few nifty prizes from Outdoor Research, Nikwax and others. Let's make the most of it... drink beer, dirt bag it at the trailhead Saturday night, and climb in Darrington the next day Moderators, please move up to Events - thanks Edited May 25, 2006 by Toast
Weekend_Climberz Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 I think this is an awesome event. I have always tried to give back something in order to hopefully make things better for others in the future. Count me in
Toast Posted May 28, 2006 Author Posted May 28, 2006 Hey Mods, can we get this moved to the Events Forum?
Dave_Schuldt Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 I would be there but I'm working on another trail.
JayB Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 Sounds like a great project. Kudos to the folks that put this together. I'd be there if I weren't 3254 miles away.
catbirdseat Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 Dave, you're always working on "another" trail "Another Trail" means a bicycle trail rather than one that climbers use.
mattp Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 With or without Dave, we'll have a good time working on the trail to 3:00 rock. It needs it. And, weather permitting, we'll probably do some climbing, too.
mattp Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 There will be plenty of time to climb this route, for example: According to Eric and Lucie, it is the "Crimson Chrysalis" of Darrington.
Cobra_Commander Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 If that were the case there would be 4 parties rappeling on those guys right now (and it would be dark).
G-spotter Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 This was taken from the Guinness Book of World Records for "most climbers belayed by a single leader"? You got like 4 seconds on there, each with their own rope clipped through the draws, and the leader has two separate Reversos up top to manage it all.
mattp Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 Look again, Dru. One party is passing another. And they are using the same bolts. Oh the horror.
G-spotter Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 Yeah, so do some draws have 4 ropes through them, or what? It looks funny.
mattp Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 Do you like this one better? There'll be time to make the second ascent of this soon-to-be classic, too. You can get on it before it gets crowded.
mattp Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 In all the excitement, we are forgetting about THE TRAIL. Come out and help, folks: We'll meet in Darrington Saturday morning. Send me or Catbird a private message if you are interested in helping with a trail project and seeing this great area.
Toast Posted June 1, 2006 Author Posted June 1, 2006 Trail looks crappy. Sure be nice if somebody would work on one of these trails us climbers use
Weekend_Climberz Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 So where are the details?? It sounds like there is going to be quite a few folks
mattp Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 Yes, it'll be a bunch of folks. The Everett Mountaineers are using it as a service project that fills their requirement for such endeavors as part of their basic or intermediate program or something like that. Because it is a Mountaineers event, you are asked to go to their website at www.mountaineers.org and scroll half way down the page and sign up under "national trails day work parties" or whatever it is. You don't have to be a Mountaineer to sign up, and this will help project coordinators. If you wake up tomorrow morning and just want to come on out, we can handle that, too, but pre-registration would be helpful. We'll meet at 8:00 am at "Old School Park," on the right a couple blocks after you turn right in front of the Mini Mart where highway 530 makes a left. The trailhead, up Clear Creek, looks like this: Come on out and find out what Darrington climbing is all about, or just show up and help with the trail. Wear boots, long pants, long shirt, and bring a helmet. Work gloves are a good idea. Bring climbing gear too: there will be time to climb after we knock off.
catbirdseat Posted June 5, 2006 Posted June 5, 2006 Matt, I don't know where you and Mark get the energy to go climbing after putting in a day of trailwork. I was tired and went off to eat burgers and drink beer. My hat's off to you.
mattp Posted June 6, 2006 Posted June 6, 2006 We both agreed that, after working on the trail for most of a day, we were too tired to climb anything too terribly taxing. We did, however manage to climb the first six pitches of Silent Running. These were dry; pitch 7 looked damp. It was pleasant to have the rock all to ourselves and it was nice to walk up and down the new improved trail.
