However it is my understanding that iron is the highest atomic number element whose formation from fusion of lighter isotopes results in a net release of energy. To fuse iron nuclei requires a net input of energy. This explains why heavier elements than iron are relatively rare. All were formed when stars exploded in the distant past as supernovae.
