I've been there recently, we stopped by a gym that looked ok near Old Town http://www.solidrockgym.com/maps_directions.html

 

and got directions from them for climbing in the Mission Gorge area, which had nice trail running and a lot of 1 pitch sport and trad granite climbing only 20 minutes or so from Old Town. It was a nice deal, a kind of foothills/mountain vibe very close to town. Here's a link to a free download and other SD climbing spots:

Santee is the best / closest bouldering though somewhat urban/suburban. Mission State Park (I think that's what its called) is even closer but is greasy cragging and not much bouldering. If you want to drive further, Mt. Woodson is pretty good but mostly bouldering and some short TRing. Some longer more advenurous shit on obscure granite domes, but looks like you won't be there long enough to explore.

 

And you can always go get your pump on at pump wall.
