biteme Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 Boy I've seen some bad climbing movies in my time but SUBZERO wins my vote for the worst one yet! Any other nominees? Quote
charlesclaassen Posted November 9, 2005 Posted November 9, 2005 My favorite good bad climbing movie is The Mountain staring Spencer Tracy and Robert Wagner. 1956. Too bad I can't get it on Netflix. Quote
ivan Posted November 9, 2005 Posted November 9, 2005 any movie involving k2 Â i saw a wonderfully terrible climbing scene in the next to last season of "enterprise" as well - 2 climbers climbing technical rock in the dead of summer w/ denali-sized packs - they're roped, climbing side-by-side, no pro - rope dangling down 20 m below each other - guess it made filming the dialoug easier.. my style! curtveld Posted November 9, 2005 Posted November 9, 2005 All of em, but Touching the Void, far as I can tell. My nod goes to that 80s Star Trek flick that opened with Kirk free-soloing El Cap. Quote
Orange_Julius Posted November 9, 2005 Posted November 9, 2005 hell yeah star trek V shatner pulls down hard in that one Quote
layton Posted November 9, 2005 Posted November 9, 2005 hey fuck you for not liking sub-zero. that's the best climbing movie ever hands down. go sit on a rock Quote
biteme Posted November 9, 2005 Author Posted November 9, 2005 Hey Michael, did you not notice the chair lift at basecamp ? Or perhaps the trees near the summit of K2? Or the nuts needed for the final push? Great flick Quote
layton Posted November 9, 2005 Posted November 9, 2005 yeah, i liked the ski runs in the distance too. BUT my disbelief was suspended due to the the gripping storyline, acting, and dialogue. Â great film. amazing. Â I also liked how they expanded upon the concept of the "pointman." My pointman also died tragically so it really hit home. you will burn in evelasting hell for dissing this fine film. Quote
Jason_Martin Posted November 9, 2005 Posted November 9, 2005 Check out "Take it to the Limit." There's something to be said for a movie that is so bad its good. Â Jason Quote
ncascademtns Posted November 9, 2005 Posted November 9, 2005 This thread should have been labeled as Good or Bad climbing movies. Â The Eiger Sanction with Clint Eastwood was a good movie. Quote
Gender_Bender Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Yes i agree with jason..... I was laughing so hard during "take it to the limit" i was crying... no shit. Get a bunch of people together some beer and go at it mystery science theater style.... by far worst climbing movie ever.... Quote
sitandbefit Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 "Take to the Limit" also had a badass title song. It really upped the drama during the top-roped 60 degree 5.1 speed climbing climax. I don't wanna ruin it but one contestant was bit by a snake and another contestant was a real hero. Take it to the limit, limit. [repeat ad nauseum] Quote
pzack Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 It's a trick question. There are no bad climbing movies. Quote
Chopi Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 If I'm asked on my deathbed if there is anything I want to go back and undo, my answer would be to not watch Vertical Limit. I'd like those 2hrs of my life back, please. Quote
magellan Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 4 hours, because I watched it twice. Quote
darstog Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Has anybody seen "K2" (or as I like to call it "K2: The Ultimate High") lately? I would venture to say that it's a fine film. A stunning cinematic achievement. There are so many issues raised in the film that continue to be relevant to this day. Alpine style vs. seige style mountaineering: "Fast and loose is not the way to climb K2" Â "Dallas is the best expedition planner in the states." "If I would have known that, I would have let him pack my bags for me." Â Oooh, just thinking about it gets my heart thumping. On belay, Taylor Quote
Gender_Bender Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 (edited) yeah but without Vertical limit what would people who dont climb talk to you about when you tell them your a climber...... besides the BIG 3 as i like to call them  1)Do you climb upside down 2)Do you have a bolt gun 3)And do you want to climb everest Edited November 10, 2005 by Gender_Bender Quote
layton Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 4.)how did you get the rope up there 5.) my favorite: did you get to the top? 6.)were you free climbing? 7.)who was your point man? Quote
chirp Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 5.) my favorite: did you get to the top? When I worked as a ranger at Devils Tower in the mid 80's and on my climbing days (days off) loved to bait the visitors. They always asked this and I always replied: "Nope, we went all the way". They would nod and look perplexed but respectful enough not to ask me to elaborate. Quote
ken4ord Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 I saw this one film, well I guess I wouldn't call it a film, let's say video, where a group of 20 somethings male and females went to J-tree. They hired a guide and went out climbing for the day. It was funny you tell the guide was cracking up about the shit they were talking and havign to be belay slave to these completely inexperienced "stars". The other funny thing was they blocked out the guides face so you couldn't tell who he was. After climbing with the guide they went around the boulders of J-Tree and for the rest of the "film". I can't remember the name it though. Quote
