Alasdair
Anyone I know who graduated in Chemistry left the field because they wanted to make some money. Chemistry has to be one of the only degrees where if you continue your education past a batchellors degree you are destined to make less money. John Frieh
NOLSe--pchem was just lame waste of 6 credits  btw--as far as education goes, i'm not even a chemist. chemistry is for nerds who can't hack biochemistry.  Yeah... protein structure and folding has nothing to do with gibbs free energy yeah-but you couldn't hack it so you went the pchem route. loser  Actually I was a chem, biochem, biophysics triple major until my senior year when I realized I didn't want to spend the rest of my life in a lab with an HPLC and bitchy office mates
ashw_justin
Yeah... protein structure and folding has nothing to do with gibbs free energy  everyone knows that proteins fold by intelligent design.

Alasdair
Most of the people I worked with in the software field have science degrees. I would guess it was about 50/50 computer science/other science at microsoft.

Alasdair
My first job interview out of college was a place called molecular probes in Eugene. At the end of this several hour interview the HR lady informs me that the pay was 14. I said $14/ hour? She said no $14k a year. I informed her I could make more working at Burger King part time. Fuckers only did the interview so they could prove to imigration that they could not hire an american for that price. I should have realized this when I spent the first interview asking they interviewer to write it down because I could not understand what the hell he was saying. JayB
What kind of job was it at Molecular Probes?
Alasdair
I dont remember the specifics, but it was for some type of bench chemist job. Organic synthesis of some type. I think on organic dyes, but I dont really know.
tomtom
Chemistry is for ChemEs that can't do math and would prefer to make $20,000 less out of school. Â Chemistry is for kids who want to make their own drugs. Â
Dru
The lows in science are really really low, and the highs.... they're ok! Â Yes it doesn't take much for chemists to get high, they have all the precursorsin the lab.
bunglehead
One thing Molecular Probes does is make protein markers for research. I think they're also dabbling with bioluminescent proteins. I have some friends that have been working there for a while, and they're making less than 38K a year. They don't make a lot.
