Jerry_Eline Posted May 22, 2002 Posted May 22, 2002 Hi All, Hope to ski/climb Sahale on June 15th. Any info on status of plowing Cascade River Road would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Jerry Quote
Climzalot Posted May 22, 2002 Posted May 22, 2002 I talked to the ranger station in Marbelmount last week and they said there is major work taking place on the road right now due to washouts, windfall, and snow. The road is driveable to the 12 mile mark which is still 10.5 miles from Cascades Pass and 8-9 miles from the Eldo-BB trailheads. I asked for and estimated opening time and they did not have an answer for me. It did not sound good. Weeks? If anyone else has heard differently or has better info I would love to hear it. Thanks cgentzel@aai.cc Quote
westernbackcountryskier Posted May 22, 2002 Posted May 22, 2002 I called the ranger last week, they told me it was open to mile 19, leaving 3 miles to go. but after reading the previous report who knows who's right, your best bet would to call them personally. or go look for yourself. Good luck Quote
Norm Posted May 23, 2002 Posted May 23, 2002 I was up there last weekend. It's gated at the climber’s trail to Eldorado, and will likely stay that way for a while. There's a gargantuan amount of slide debris around Midas Creek Quote
geordie Posted May 24, 2002 Posted May 24, 2002 As stated often here... do a search first on CC. The cascade river road is open to the Eldorado gate at approx mp 20/21. I'm headed that way today, so more later, but I wouldn't expect the road to fully open until 4th of July. GR Quote
geordie Posted May 24, 2002 Posted May 24, 2002 Hiked up to CP lot today. Avalanche debris is the largest I've seen in the past 5 years. Lots of trees across the road. I wouldn't plan on an early opening. 3-5' of snow on the trail up to CP. GR Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted June 3, 2002 Posted June 3, 2002 geordie get your ass in gear and start making more tickets to fund the road maintenance you gaper Then I will come and send a mountain up there this summer whilst drinking heavily without a permit to camp. See if you can find me Quote

Stefan Posted June 4, 2002 Posted June 4, 2002 Come on guys. Anybody up there this past weekend? I know the road is gated, but is it mountainbikable to the Cascade Pass trailhead? Quote
Sleeveless Posted June 4, 2002 Posted June 4, 2002 Got the following from: http://www.turns-all-year.com/tripreportfr.html Saturday, June 1, 2002 Sahale Mountain: ..... The Cascade River Road remains gated at Eldorado Creek, an elevation of 2200 feet and a good three or four miles from the trailhead. The first mile or two is in good shape, with an occasional blowdown or bit of avalanche debris waiting for the appropriate public servants to do their thing. After the next gate-the usual closure this time of year-things deteriorated rapidly, with great swathes of mowed-down forest heaped high across the roadway and down into the valley. Soldier Boy Creek was particularly impressive, featuring a quarter mile scramble over giant piles of downed trees mixed with rock and snow. The skiing will be long gone before the park service opens the road to the trailhead this summer. Quote
Stefan Posted June 4, 2002 Posted June 4, 2002 That is great info. I will be up there the weekend of the 15th too..... So, I will be asking again next week to see if the Forest Service or NPS did any improvement.... Two years ago at this exact time I was able to mountainbike to the end of the road and I never came across one downed tree. I can't wait to get up there! Quote
plexus Posted June 4, 2002 Posted June 4, 2002 Talked with a ranger from the N Cascades Natl Park the other day and she said that the road is going to get top priority. Lots of buzzsawed trees on the road. Also found out for those wanting to do Despair or Triumph, Thorton Lakes Road is a mess bigger than Cascade River Road. It is drivable maybe a mile before there are trees down all over the place. That one is going to take some time. Quote
Norm Posted June 5, 2002 Posted June 5, 2002 About 2/3 of it miles are mtnbikable with one patch of debris you'll have to walk through. Once you hit Midas creek you'll be ditching the bike if you didn't ditch it at the massive tree fall (three mature doug firs on the road) about 1/4 mile before. Quote
nolanr Posted June 6, 2002 Posted June 6, 2002 Off topic, but I noticed a couple weeks ago several patches of blown down trees along the road out to Monte Cristo townsite. Never seen that before. Big snow pack, some pretty impressive avalanches this winter/spring apparently. Quote
JERRY_SANCHEZ Posted June 6, 2002 Posted June 6, 2002 hey just wondering how the road to Sibling Creek to Hidden Lakes? It is the steep 4 miles logging road that is 9 miles in from Cascade River Road. The Last I heard it had tons of down trees as well and is impassable both car and bikes. Thanks for the info... Quote
Stefan Posted June 10, 2002 Posted June 10, 2002 Okay people. How was the Cascade road this past weekend? I want details!!! Thanks! Quote
geordie Posted June 14, 2002 Posted June 14, 2002 The planned opening date for the CRR is July 22. If anything changes I'll post it here. Asking about the road every few days isn't going to undo all the avy debris... Ray- Are you still threatening to do that top secret route on Sahale... It's madness!! -g Quote
JERRY_SANCHEZ Posted June 14, 2002 Posted June 14, 2002 Hey geordie, what about the Sibling creek road to Hidden Lake Peak? The know at least half of the road is still cover with snow but the last I heard there were tons of down trees on the road. I was hoping to go up there and do some skiing. Thanks for the info Quote
philfort Posted June 14, 2002 Posted June 14, 2002 From http://66.155.42.150/advscripts/mbs_rd2_rpt.asp Sibley CR/Hidden LK: 6/9/2002: Rough sections. Snowbound past 4+ miles ...implying the trees have been cleared... Quote
PackOnMyBack Posted June 17, 2002 Posted June 17, 2002 Went up to Boston Basin TH on 6/15. Road is gated @ Eldo TH, with only a few downed trees between it and gate at MP 21. Between MP 21 gate and BB TH, major slide debris and more trees down. A little chainsaw work would open the road to MP 21 gate. Quote
