layton Posted August 10, 2005 Author Posted August 10, 2005 never mind i just ordered one from MEC online at a reduced price. sweet. I love this pack and rue the day i had to trade it for a cam i dropped. Quote
JoshK Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 I couldn't agree more. The genie is a fine piece of equipment. Quote
thelawgoddess Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 for future reference lowe alpine makes a pack like the genie. pms used to carry them but i haven't been in there lately so don't know if still do. Quote
Crack Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 brand name suckas -nothing is lighter and more waterproof than a ziplock...just duct tape it to the small of your back and go go go! Quote
chris Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 I heard Lowe Alpine discontinued the Summit Attach (20L). Dana Designs offers a similar pack made out of Sil-Nylon, but it looked even smaller. The Genie is bigger, 26-28L I think, but I can make it work for overnight trips! Quote
selkirk Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Genie if freakin sweet! Big enough for light overnights, light enough for a summit pack, durable enough to drag up chimney! Quote
layton Posted August 13, 2005 Author Posted August 13, 2005 the dana is a total piece of garbage, the ziplock bag would work better Quote
JoshK Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 Flat out the genie is the best pack of that style. Light but sturdy - a perfect compromise. I have put several days in that fucker. Thanks for the tip on the MEC closeout, Mike, I ordered another at that price. Quote
Kitergal Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 yeah! Mike you rock! I just ordered one myself! yeah Quote
fishstick Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 The MEC Alpinelite 30 is the replacement. It's padded, but the pad is removeable and it then stuffs into its pocket as before. See W05 catalogue. GB Quote
Nick Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 Granite Gear used to make a summit pack a lot like the Genie, except that it had side compression straps which made it carry better than my Genie does. Quote
treknclime Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 My Genie rocks. Have taken it on 3 day trips and appreciated the 1.0+ lbs. Have thought to put on a couple of lightweight compression straps on each side, and small pockets on the sides for pickets, and it'd be my total fav. That's the only mods I'd make on it. Quote
9596 Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 I've also got a Serratus Genie. In fact, I've got two! (a small, and a large. The small fits me better so if anyone wants a 'size long, blue' make me an offer). I've used it in the Rockies, the Presidentials, and a 5 day trip in the ADKs. House and Josephson used it on King Peak. I've got a video of one on the summit of Everest! It is a great pack with a lot of credibility. I've looked at the new MEC Alpinelite 30 on the MEC site and I don't think it compares. The reason I decided on the Genie was because of its uncluttered, compressible simplicity...no extra straps, crampon patches, or extra weight. But hold on! The Alpenlite 30 weighs the same 400g as the Genie!!! How is that possible??? The fabric is a similar denier, and the pack is a similar size but has a back pad, and extra junk on it. They're getting very scarce. I just bought the small one last month after the MEC rep scoured the computer inventory for it! cheers, Urban Sherpa Quote
Dr_Crash Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 If the AlpineLite 30 is indeed the same size and weight, my question is how well will it compress when you remove the back padding? If it compresses as well as the Genie, then it looks like a great small pack to get. drC Quote
jordop Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 PMS has a Grivel genie equivalent deal. New MEC Superlite 30 for $49 is where it is at, though a bit heavier than Genie. Lowe Mountain Attack 30 Hyperlite is a good but $$ GEnie improvement. Quote
rhyang Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 The Alpinelite 30 is not the same weight as the Genie - in fact, the MEC website now states the weight of the Alpinelite is 720g. Just got one in the mail and sure enough it weighs more than a Golite Jam (which carries something like 11L more) ! Quote
magellan Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 Love my new REI flash pack, 1000 cubes, hydration sleeve, weighs about 10 ounces, very water resistant, turns inside out to hold a sleeping bag, and only $25. Quote
Dr_Crash Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 The Alpinelite 30 is not the same weight as the Genie - in fact, the MEC website now states the weight of the Alpinelite is 720g. Just got one in the mail and sure enough it weighs more than a Golite Jam (which carries something like 11L more) ! Could you weigh it, both with and without the removable back pad? I am very interested in this pack and would like to know the real weight. MEC lists both 390 g and 720 g for the Std pack, could it be that? If so, it'd be a sweet Genie replacement w/o the back pad. drC Quote
fishstick Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 I think the weights on the web/in catalogue may be wrong (I work for MEC). I have requested that the pack be weighed as follows: With foam pad. Without foam pad. Without foam pad, and compression straps removed. I will confirm when I get my reply. Cheers, GB Quote

fishstick Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 Alpinelite 30 std = 664g Alpinelite 30 std sans foam = 634g Alpinelite 30 std sans foam and compression straps = 586g As weighed on a postal scale. GB Quote
rhyang Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 ~660g sounds better - my scale said about 22 oz, but after seeing the 720g on the website I figured I had to have done something wrong Quote
