TeleRoss Posted July 26, 2005 Author Posted July 26, 2005 Here's a photo of some fox cubs....I don't know they look pretty similar to the marten to me? Quote
Mal_Con Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 Martins are in the weasel/skun family and foxs in the dog family Martins smell kind of like skunks but not as strong. Quote
mtn_mouse Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 That is a martin. Martes americana. Family mustelidae, just like skunks, weasels, fishers, otters, etc. Â Don't you guys ever go into the mountains??? geeeezzz Quote
Dru Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 I bet it was some other weasel and not a marten at all. Quote

Family mustelidae, just like skunks, weasels, fishers, otters, etc.  Don't you guys ever go into the mountains??? geeeezzz  Your research is flawed. Skunks are no longer considered to be mustelids, but instead have their own family, Mephitidae.  Clickety click Quote

mtn_mouse Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 Your research is flawed. Â Crushed! Four years, a wildlife degree, and they change the rules. Are skunks now white, with black stripes? Quote
Alex Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 dang, in my day, skunks were mustelids, and we liked it! Â as an aside, when we were trapping marten, we used ground up skunk anus as an odor attractant! you gotta believe we were popular in town.....! Quote
Dru Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 Poor skunks. can you buy that in Enumclaw or were you grinding your own every day? Quote
EWolfe Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 Are you sure it wasn't a Martin? Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Quote
olyclimber Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 I'm sure it is a pine weasel. Those are nearly extinct. We need to make all of Washington state a preserve for the lowly pine weasel. Quote
Recycled Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Looks like a marten to me, though I don't think they hang out above treeline much. Maybe it was on Pika patrol. Â When I was the Kulshan Cabin caretaker back in the early 80s, there was a marten that hung around the cabin taking care of mice for me. It was not particularly shy, though I certainly didn't want to get too close to those teeth. Â Speaking of useful predators, anyone personally seen a wolverine in the N. Cascades? Quote
TheOtter Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 I saw this little guy up on Triumph today. Kinda like a little skinny fox like thing. Â Well it ain't no otter. Â I just thought I otter chime in. Quote
sobo Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Well it ain't no otter. Â I just thought I otter chime in. Â Was wondering when you'd get around to this thread... Quote
sobo Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Stick to the "bird" threads, Brad... Â Hey, did you notice that "steaksauce" doesn't convert to "Nodder" anymore? Quote
Ducknut Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Stick to the "bird" threads, Brad... Â Hey, did you notice that "steaksauce" doesn't convert to "Nodder" anymore? Â well I do like boobies better Quote
