Mal_Con
Martins are in the weasel/skun family and foxs in the dog family Martins smell kind of like skunks but not as strong.
mtn_mouse
That is a martin. Martes americana. Family mustelidae, just like skunks, weasels, fishers, otters, etc. Â Don't you guys ever go into the mountains??? geeeezzz
Dru
I bet it was some other weasel and not a marten at all.

Family mustelidae, just like skunks, weasels, fishers, otters, etc.  Don't you guys ever go into the mountains??? geeeezzz  Your research is flawed. Skunks are no longer considered to be mustelids, but instead have their own family, Mephitidae.  Clickety click
Dru
If it smells like skunk it must be us.

mtn_mouse
Your research is flawed. Â Crushed! Four years, a wildlife degree, and they change the rules. Are skunks now white, with black stripes?
Alex
dang, in my day, skunks were mustelids, and we liked it! Â as an aside, when we were trapping marten, we used ground up skunk anus as an odor attractant! you gotta believe we were popular in town.....! Dru
Poor skunks. can you buy that in Enumclaw or were you grinding your own every day?

olyclimber
I'm sure it is a pine weasel. Those are nearly extinct. We need to make all of Washington state a preserve for the lowly pine weasel.
Recycled
Looks like a marten to me, though I don't think they hang out above treeline much. Maybe it was on Pika patrol. Â When I was the Kulshan Cabin caretaker back in the early 80s, there was a marten that hung around the cabin taking care of mice for me. It was not particularly shy, though I certainly didn't want to get too close to those teeth. Â Speaking of useful predators, anyone personally seen a wolverine in the N. Cascades?
