layton Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 is the word on the street up in the hillz. anyone get out this week with any stories on conditions? it seems we have all the right ingredients for awesome alpine ice climbing, but in the wrong order. Quote
dberdinka Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 Anything in direct sunlight (SE to SW facing slopes) is compacted and wet. You could posthole in it easily. Anything that is slight north facing is dreamy powder (killer skiing) Logging Roads are a bitch, wet powder with a lite crust on top. The only thing you have for good alpine climbing right now is good weather. Howeverb its WARM at elevation and I think it takes good weather+cold temps+good snow conditions (i.e. compact) to make for reasonable climbing conditions. Quote
MCash Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 Yeah, but we need our fix. I'm ready for killer postholing on Sunday. Quote
Maestro Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 Forget the wet stuff! I'm ready for some midwinter rock! Quote
COL._Von_Spanker Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 I was wondering about conditions as well, I would like to take the old lady and the dog to the top of a mountain, but can figure out which would be best in the current odd conditions. Quote
klenke Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 Anything in direct sunlight (SE to SW facing slopes) is compacted and wet. You could posthole in it easily. Anything that is slight north facing is dreamy powder (killer skiing). Having been out yesterday I can't attest to this completely. Get it while you can. Quote
MisterMo Posted February 19, 2005 Posted February 19, 2005 Anything in direct sunlight (SE to SW facing slopes) is compacted and wet. You could posthole in it easily. Anything that is slight north facing is dreamy powder (killer skiing) This is correct. The only obstacle(s) to dream skiing in the shady fluff are whatever's right underneath it. There is zero base. JasonG Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 North aspects in the Baker BC were sweeeeeeeet today! Anything else was a major crust fest. Just a little update for those who might be headed up . . . Quote
