snoboy
Occasionaly I get to blow snow up at the ski hill, and it's kinda fun. Never have I managed to make such a big result as this 96.3 MB video from New Zealand's Mt Ruapehu, filmed last September. Apologies as I may have posted this before, but it's worth it if you didn't see it the first time.

olyclimber
That is freaking amazing to watch. A huge river of snow. Note to self: Avalanche course
Jamie
80% of people who die in avalanches have been through an avalanche training course!!!!! (Paradoxiclly, that doesn't mean you shouldn't take one).
snoboy
I would love to see your source for that.

steepconcrete
very cool. makes me think of the Bachelor slide from a few weeks ago...just kept on going.
snoboy
Just found this news item in the telemarktips discussion of this video. Apparently the avalanche was a little more like the Bachy slide then you might have thought... Oops!
Greta
Ooops is right. By watching the guys who were filming that clip, I would have never guessed that people were scattering down river. They didnt seem too concerned. Damn.
steepconcrete
Apparently the avalanche was a little more like the Bachy slide then you might have thought... Oops! I havent been aware of bachelor admiting any fault. I do think it is pretty pathetic to have a natrual slide of that magnitude, no matter what time in the day at a resort during the operating year. Sadly inbounds slides are not uncommon around here-> Hoodoo's backside slid out natrually 2 years ago, 20' deep deposits on the getback trail. snoboy
Did not mean to imply in any way that it was Bachelor's fault, just that it ran into a ski area...
steepconcrete
I should not imply fault either, cause that was a crazy storm; but I hope they have learned somthing, and I think they should of and could of been more on top of it. Its obvious that there are slide paths outta the bowl/cirque and down thru that area. Just check out Bruce Jackons "the summit" print and the difference in the size of trees. edit-- on second thought, Im no avie scientist, just a geology student..so as I think about this, im thinking snow can load so fast and change so quickly that we cant do a thing about it and this shit happens...nutty.
