AlpineK Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 Until Fairweather has to pay the taxes on replacing the Alaska Way Viaduct with a tunnel. Personally I would just retrofit the shit out of the old viaduct, but I'm willing to pay my share for the tunnel if it makes a few people in spray. Quote
RuMR Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 you can't retrofit that thing worth half a shit... Quote
AlpineK Posted December 7, 2004 Author Posted December 7, 2004 Well maybe it wouldn't work, but it would be cool to try. Quote
RuMR Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 cut and cover tunnel...fix the seawall...gonna be a kickin' project...and Fairweather gets to help pay for it... Quote
EWolfe Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 I agree it is the best solution for all, but egads! Man! The cost! Pony up, Fairweather Quote
EWolfe Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 Maybe they could try for a "Paul Allen Memorial" section to alleviate the tax burden... Quote
AlpineK Posted December 7, 2004 Author Posted December 7, 2004 They're building that and everyone in Seattle's paying. I'm mostly psyched about bitchy nonresidents paying to improve Seattle streets. Quote
Fairweather Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 The New Tacoma Narrows project will cost $800 million. Those who use it will be paying 100% of its construction cost (and bond-debt retirement) through tolls. Is it wrong to ask Seattle residents and others who will use this proposed $4 Billion tunnel to do the same? BTW, AK; this reply was only a hit. I have not firmly bitten down on this troll and am now swimming off to look for better bait. Quote

Is it wrong to ask Seattle residents and others who will use this proposed $4 Billion tunnel to do the same? If Tom Foley were in Office you think they'd be paying $800 million? Do you really think Seattle residents should pay the $4 billion when even odd's have us (as US Citizens) paying $2 billion for the Knik Arm Bridge in Alaska - a bridge that some estimates say will see a few thousand people a day max? Quote
klenke Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 They "say" the tunnel version would cost $4 Billion but you know damn well it'll only be halfway finished by the time that $4 Billion is spent (think The Big Dig). It'll end up costing $10 Billion. Quote
Off_White Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 In the big picture, Seattle area residents pay more in transportation taxes than they get in infrastructure. In fact, all you liberal Seattle latte slurpers help pay for roads in all those red counties, not the other way around, so if they've got to pony up a little more, it's only fair. It's a pity you don't get more credit for all you pump into the state economy. That viaduct scares the shit out of me anyway. I had a friend who missed being pancaked in San Francisco by two minutes, and I've never looked at Alaskan Way the same since. Quote

Arteries pump the blood (money), veins return it when depleted (crime, republican politicians, methamphetamines) Quote

I'm not totally opposed to tolls in the new tunnel, but keeping traffic moving smoothly around the port is going to benefit a lot of eastern washington farmers shipping grain and other exporters. Fairweather Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 ....lot of eastern washington farmers shipping grain and other exporters. My god! If we're now exporting the exporters, who will be left to export the exports?! Quote
