mtnrgr
I got a choice of where I can be stationed in WA. With a climbing prespective should I go to Ft. Lewis or Yakima/ Ellensburg? My wife needs to finish her anthropolgy Degree. How is CWU? Or should I try to get her into a Western WA school. Hope to join y'all at a pub club soon
Alex
What kind of climbing do you do? If volcanoes, Ft Lewis might be good. If rock, Yakima might be better for Vantage/Tieton
mtnrgr
I've mainly trad climb, but I hope I have the time for more Alpine this time around.
Alex
If rock and Alpine, then I'd say Yakima. You have the Southern Cascades incl Mt Adams close, Tieton rock climbing area is very close, Vantage not too far, and as for Alpine the Stuart Range is closer to Yaki-Vegas than it is to Seattle. Yakima itself is hotter and drier in the Summer, colder in the winter (very decent ice climbing nearby) and weirder in general, but there it is. sobo
...and weirder in general, but there it is. Oh, Alex, say it ain't so!
layton
Hey, Fort Lewis would be a terrible place to live. At least Yakima/Ellensberg is close to Leavenworth and alpine rock. If I was your wife, I'd go to WWU in Bellingham and leave your ass.
johndavidjr
Marching around Ft. Lewis might be no fun, but it's an easy commute to Olympia area, which isn't so bad.` If your wife is undergrad, she could get a degree at Evergreen, which is okay in anthropology, relatively hassel-free and even utilitarian & respectable in most civilized circles. specialed
On one hand E-burg is a college town close to decent cragging, skiing, and has ok weather, on the other hand south Tacoma has a plethora of titty bars.

grtmtnchic
I'm from Yakima and went to CWU. PM me if you want info about the lifestyle there, etc. Totally different world from the Westside of the mtns.

chrisn
I actually have an anthropology degree from WWU and have lived in Ellensburg and Seattle. The undergrad degrees at the Washington schools are all pretty good. And, the fact is Yakima/E-Burg puts you in a good location to get to a lot of alpine and rock areas in Washington and Oregon. The Puget Sound area is great for some people but folks not ready for the winter rains could find it dreary and depressing.
