richard_noggin Posted May 5, 2004 Posted May 5, 2004 Anybody know why so many deer have mange? 20 years ago I don't recall ever seeing a deer with mange ....That hair loss thing has got me freaked...are they safe to eat? I expect spray ...please someone give up the facts. Quote
billcoe Posted May 5, 2004 Posted May 5, 2004 All I know is that it seemed to have spread to my head. Quote
Norman_Clyde Posted May 5, 2004 Posted May 5, 2004 Terry McClain says that the mange is due to a parasitic infestation. Some sort of snail parasite has infested the grass in this region, the deer ingest it when eating the grass, they get the parasitic infection, they lose their hair. It is not actually a primary skin problem, but a systemic illness. That's all I know. The MRNP rangers, or most any ranger in the state, can probably tell you a lot more. Or send a pm to Terry. Quote
kurthicks Posted May 5, 2004 Posted May 5, 2004 I'd also contribute it to the continual loss of predatory species that kill off the weaklings. Quote
Terry_McClain Posted May 5, 2004 Posted May 5, 2004 Wash. Fish and Wildlife now think it is a muscle worm (parasite) larvae that gets in lungs, causes low grade pneumonia, that suppresses immune system, allowing lice to take over. More info here: http://wdfw.wa.gov/factshts/hairloss.htm Quote
DPS Posted May 5, 2004 Posted May 5, 2004 Are you sure it is not D.P.B (deer pattern baldness)? Quote
Greg_W Posted May 5, 2004 Posted May 5, 2004 Animals are also shedding winter coats right about now, too. Quote
