Bronco Posted March 9, 2004 Posted March 9, 2004 Man finds pack loaded with $500,000 cash WENATCHEE -- A pedestrian who found a backpack filled with nearly $500,000 near Ellisforde likely helped disrupt a drug deal, Okanogan County officials said. The pedestrian found the pack full of money hidden along Highway 97 north of Ellisforde on Friday and called authorities, Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers said. He declined the name the pedestrian. Law enforcement officers believe the cash was destined for use in the drug trade, Rogers said. Deputies took the cash and replaced it in the backpack with police magazines and other police materials that gave it a similar weight and size, then they put it back in the brush. David L. Taber Jr., 35, of Oroville, who allegedly drove to the location about 7:30 p.m. Friday, picked up the backpack and drove away, was arrested and made a court appearance Monday on money laundering charges in Okanogan County Superior Court. icegirl Posted March 9, 2004 Posted March 9, 2004 heh. I went to HS with his younger sister... D'oh. Quote
Fejas Posted March 9, 2004 Posted March 9, 2004 Dood 500G's! I woulda had a new rack of gear, new set of skies, and a pimped out Jeep that same day! Quote
Lars Posted March 9, 2004 Posted March 9, 2004 it says a lot about someone's character and honesty to report something like that instead of just keeping it. Quote
icegirl Posted March 9, 2004 Posted March 9, 2004 yes. but then in that area (very small towns), everyone would know and wonder "how" you came up with 500 large ones. You'd have to move. Quote
catbirdseat Posted March 9, 2004 Posted March 9, 2004 That would be a mighty strong test of anyone's character. You know, that the guy that found it will probably get at least some of the money. So if the money is "claimed" by a criminal is it the same as unclaimed money? Quote
Fejas Posted March 9, 2004 Posted March 9, 2004 If its claimed by a criminal then it becomes evidance and confiscated by the police department. Atleast he could of kept a hundered grand... Quote
Thrill Posted March 9, 2004 Posted March 9, 2004 Since there isn’t laws saying you can’t pick up a backpack full of money they don’t have anything on the guy. So they’ll have to look for something else. A back pack of money is cause for speculation but doesn’t prove it was drugs or laundering. So he’ll get off scott free, and when he does he’ll request his money. Sure he’ll have to pay the taxes on it but who wouldn’t. Do we have any attorneys with an opinion on this? Quote
fern Posted March 9, 2004 Posted March 9, 2004 I found $2200 cash that was probably 'drug trade' related once. I bought a bass guitar and a trip to France. Quote
ashw_justin Posted March 9, 2004 Posted March 9, 2004 Hey... there's $576,241 in here... better round it off to 500,000 to make it easier on those overworked police. Quote
foraker Posted March 9, 2004 Posted March 9, 2004 Other versions on the web indicate that there was additional information in the pack that led police to believe it was for a drug buy. Whether you believe that or not is another issue. If you were living in a dinky town with a crappy job and found $500K, would it be such a big deal to move? As for six degress of separation, I went to high school with Steve Letourneau. We all remember him don't we? I forgot about him until I saw his face in magazine one day..... Quote

That would be the dumbest thing you could possibly do. The drug runners know exactly how much is in there. As soon as they find out it isn't all there, guess who they are going to go after? Quote
