Gary_Yngve
Haha, and she [her business] lost millions of dollars when her own stocks plummeted as a result of the ImClone scandal. Serves the greedy bitch right. Too bad the Enron execs are getting off as easy as they are -- no doubt thanks to their friends in power right now -- if I were pres, I would have sent the Enron execs to the Gulag. J_Fisher
It is a twisted legal system we have where you can spend 20 years in jail for a $30,000 trade that didn't hurt anyone in any way, but you can run a stop sign and kill a motorcyclist or rape someone in the back of your cop car and spend only a couple days in jail. http://www.commondreams.org/news2004/0123-06.htm http://www.bikernews.net/getnews.cfm?article=95&badcop=true

chucK
But you only have to worry about getting in trouble for securites fraud if you are a well-known strong woman that everyone secretly loathes and the public is all up in arms about stock swindles and such. And even then, you still probably won't get in trouble if your husband is president of the United States.

burgersling
Chuck, for one, she wasn't convicted of securities fraud as that charge was thrown out. Secondly, former CEO of Imclone, Sam Waskal is serving a 7 year sentence for insider trading for his involvement in this and Bacanovic the broker is going down as well. You can't really say she's being singled out in this.
ScottP
And in related news...
chucK
Probably not singled out, but they're definitely using her as a tool to show how we're getting tough on those stock swindlers. The real meat is those Enron guys, and they do seem to be tightening the noose on those guys. With regard to Waksal, did you hear that the drug that got turned down by the FDA (the event that led to him abusing the insider trading), now has been approved and it's looking like it'll be a big seller! I wonder if Waksal'll be a rich(er) man after he gets out of jail or if he sold all his stock?
bunglehead
In the interest of justice being served, I'd personally like to see that SOB Kenneth Lay in federal "pound me in the ass" prison as well. I mean it's only fair.
skykilo
No shit, how can you people be happy someone is going to jail? That's fucked. Obviously none of you have ever been to jail.
burgersling
There's jail and then there's jail. Martha will be playing squash and checkers in a minimum security, white collar detention center.

Martha will be playing squash and checkers in a minimum security, white collar detention center. Somehow I doubt that's what minimum security prisons are like. I mean, my local gym doesn't even have a squash court. (Edit) Not to stir the pot, But I kind of agree with Sky guy, It doesn't make me happy that somebody's going to the slammer. Amarosa getting kicked off "The Apprentice" now THAT made me happy. Edited March 5, 2004 by bunglehead

Mtguide
Absolutely; regardless of whether Martha's actually guilty, she's just taking the fall for Enron,Worldcom, and a host of others who simply have vastly more money, power and connections with which to prolong, delay, obfuscate and disseminate until the heat blows over.Martha is definitely small potatoes, and even smaller is Bacanovic.Anyone who thinks Ken Lay will ever spend so much as 30 seconds in jail is naive and misinformed. The government is simply making a big show of pretending to actually do something about insider trading, not to mention ripping off the Federal treasury and outrageous influence peddling in the process. Has everyone forgotten so soon that Enron wasn't just a stockmarket scandal? Or haven't you noticed the tripling and quadrupling of your electric bill? All that money had to go somewhere; but it's a trail we'll never get to follow,if the current administration has anything to say about it.They still haven't managed to get Cheney to turn over his documents on the meetings with "consultants" from the energy industry. There's all kinds of stuff that we may never be able to unravel. So,what's next? Oh yeah, now for that waitress in Topeka who didn't report her tips....
