RobBob Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 Put your choices in here. My fave (at least today it is) is the Rolling Stones' Little T&A. Clean, crisp...universal subject matter. I still like it after 20-some yrs. I mean, probably I could come up with 50 others, from Mitch Ryder's Devil With A Blue Dress to my personal theme song Won't Back Down. But something about Keith Richards' turrets-like squawking and those guitar licks make that song still stick in my head... What's yours? Quote

E-rock Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 Modest Mouse "Doin the Cockroach". Let the classic rock rest in peace. The world has been making good music in the 30 years since then. Quote
lancegranite Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 "Godzilla" Blue Oyster Cult. Imagine yourself as said creature, terrorizing your living room, perhaps chasing the cat. Quote
chucK Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 (edited) OK E-Rock, I got one that is only about 15 years old. It is a cover though "Yu Gung" done by Pussy Galore That one rocks, pummels for like six straight minutes but never gets boring or wearisome. (contains sampling of Public Enemy back when the music industry was getting all up in arms about bands like Public Enemy using samples) Edited March 1, 2004 by chucK Quote
RobBob Posted March 1, 2004 Author Posted March 1, 2004 Bad math, E-Rock. And I think the irony in your statement is that for the past 30 years nobody has come up with a whole new, original style (rap is debatably one). Not saying there hasn't been good music made in the past dozen years---there has. But it's not a whole new style and it's not superlative compared to the prior two-dozen years, and it's also riddled with bad covers. IMO. Quote
Peter_Puget Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 Street Waves – Pere Ubu (27 years old so it just sneaks in under the dateline.) LTIA IV – King Crimson Quote
RobBob Posted March 1, 2004 Author Posted March 1, 2004 for the past 30 years nobody has come up with a whole new, original style hey, I'm so full of shit...what about DISCO ? Quote
mattp Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 I'm sympathetic to your argument there, RobBob: much of what is currently hot is highly derivative. However, there's been some kick ass derivitave music, that's for sure! I have a historical correction, though: Rap is 30 years old. The Last Poets and Gil Scott Heron were doing it in the early '70's although it came into its own as a new genre with GrandMasterFlash about 1980 or so. Quote
MrDoolittle Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 "Angel of Death" - Slayer (Defined the Thrash genre) "An Offering" - Neurosis (Heaviest song ever recorded) "March of the S.O.D." - S.O.D. (Intro. riff for the Old Head Banger's Ball) Quote
RobBob Posted March 1, 2004 Author Posted March 1, 2004 good point, mattp. Actually I would put "Hello Sunday Hello Road" by Gil-Scott Heron up there as an all-time classic. Quote
chucK Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 I'll tell you whut... I haven't heard the majority of these songs people have mentioned, but I'll bet every single one of them kicks ass, hands down, on "Little T and A" I mean, if you were gonna pick a Stones song, there's only about 50 of 'em that rock 10 times harder than that anemic keep Keef happy contractual album inclusion. Hell, "Undercover", Stones do new-wave/disco, kicks ass on Little T & A. Sheesh. Oh wait, I was wrong, Little T & A does kick serious ass on "Devil with the blue Dress". Gag me. Quote
RobBob Posted March 1, 2004 Author Posted March 1, 2004 This coming from a monkey who touts a band called Pussy Galore as hard rockers. Actually Chuckie, I agree with you that the Stones have 50 good ones, and 10+ great ones. Hard to beat the entire Sticky Fingers album, etc. I just happen to like Little T&A. Sorry you don't...beyotch! Quote
mattp Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 (edited) Mitch Ryder kicks ass. You gotta learn some respect, Mr. ChucK! Do you hate Jimi Hendrix, too? Sheesh. Edited March 1, 2004 by mattp Quote
Distel32 Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 Today: Uncle Ted's Jam by Robert Randolph and the Family Band Who the fuck is that? You're too young to participate. The only thing is you'd probably dig them, blues rock jam band. Includes: Bass, Organ, Drumbs, and pedal steel guitar Quote
chucK Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 Mitch Ryder Jimi Hendrix? What's the connection there? Perhaps that maybe Jimi Hendrix is the only person who could make "Devil with the Blue dress" interesting? Too bad he's dead. (oh, and it's Dr. Chuck to you ) Quote
RobBob Posted March 1, 2004 Author Posted March 1, 2004 I set out to find a good photo of that ugly bastard Mithc Ryder...and instead found this interesting Top 10 songs of 1966 list: 1. I'm A Believer - Monkees 2. Summer In The City - Lovin' Spoonful 3. Wild Thing - Troggs 4. Hanky Panky - Tommy James And The Shondells 5. When A Man Loves A Woman - Percy Sledge 6. Soul And Inspiration - The Righteous Brothers 7. Monday, Monday - Mamas And Papas 8. Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys 9. Devil With A Blue Dress On - Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels 10. Good Lovin' - Young Rascals Funny thing is that I and probably most of you can sing all of those songs, except maybe for the Righteous Bros tune. I wonder how 1996 will look 30 years from now? Quote
Dru Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 is a drumb what a dumb drummer plays on? iggy pop "repo man" kicks ass on any of the tunes so far listed i found this mangling of the lyrics online. spot the errors I was riding on a concrete slab, Down a river of useless flab It was such a beautiful day I heard a witchdoctor say, "I'll turn you into a toadstool" I'm looking for the joke with a microscope My muscle's twitching on your words If you're on the streets you lose your nerves Divinity throws you a curve Sticks you and then you go beserk Abhoaring no inspiration. I'm looking for the joke with a microscope Page out of a comic book A chicken hanging on a hook A river and a babbling brook A sermon and a teenage hook Shaking my hand at your fake face A suicide a certain look A microphone a loose guitar People feeling near and far Stupidity a mental scar Put cruel into cruelty As life goes by you in a blurr An achoholic has gone far Everything just goes to far I was pissing on the desert sands, When the desert whispered to me, "Damn! Isn't this a shame? Things will never be the same..." I run this gas and oasis Now I'm looking for the joke with a microscope I was a teenage dinosaur, stoned and obsolete I didn't get fucked and I didn't get kissed I got so fucking dense Using my head for an ashtray Now I'll tell you who I am I'm the Repo-Man And I'm looking for the joke Looking for the joke I'm looking for the joke with a microscope Quote
