catbirdseat Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 Kurt, do you know how many degrees are spanned by that panorama shot? Looks like it might be as much as 180. Quote
catbirdseat Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 So I read in the newspaper today that Bush wants to send people to Mars. It is expected to cost $1 trillion. Considering our ANNUAL deficit will be that big in a few years, how are we going to afford it? Quote
HRoark Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 I call bullshit. That looks like the back lot at MGM. Quote
iain Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 you can see the LA smog in the background, and I think that's MJ's nose in the rubble in the lower left. Quote
whirlwind Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 don't worry when your broke the best thing to do is get another credit card chage it till its maxed then make sure your monthly payment is less then the monthly intrest charge, its good buisness. Quote
iain Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 Wonder who's going to step up as the person to go to Mars? Basically asking someone to commit suicide. Even with the robots the odds of surviving the landing are quite poor. Not to mention the enormous amount of time the individual would have to spend by themselves in space. Quote
catbirdseat Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 Are you kidding? Astronauts would fight each other to the death to go on that mission, even if you told them there was a 90% chance they'd die. First man on Mars? Immortality. Quote
whirlwind Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 plus they would actually age slower than we would here on earth, hypotheticaly speaking Quote
catbirdseat Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 plus they would actually age slower than we would here on earth, hypotheticaly speaking I should think you'd die at a younger age, since a Martian year is longer than an earth year. A man of 25 Martian years would be ancient. Quote
iain Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 I think you'd die of unnatural causes long before that. bush is out of his skull proposing that right now. we could get so much more info out of mars for the same buck w/o wasting money trying to keep a sack of salt water alive out there. Quote
Ducknut Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 His proposal is election year posturing. This is politics Bush style. His old man proposed a return to the moon during his administration. Hey they need something positive to campaign on this year. This is his vision thingy. He'll forget about it right after the election. Quote
catbirdseat Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 A sack of salt water... tell me about it. They could eventually come up with a nuclear powered robot that could crawl all over that planet for a tenth of what it would cost to put a man there. Quote
lummox Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 you all some cynical mofos. gw is all bout global love and spreading it to our neighbors. i guess. Quote
Ducknut Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 Also if memory serves me the martian year is like 325 earth days. I think what whirlwind was trying to say that if the traveled near the speed of light the astronauts would age at a different rate than friends and family at home on earth. Hypothetically maybe, but they'll have to travel at conventional speeds unless we steal the hyperdrive from the Millienum Falcon. Quote
iain Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 I could just see GWB in his flight suit again. "Punch it Chewie!" Quote
Ducknut Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 There you Ian, lets put Bush on the Mars mission, he can see if there are any WMD on Mars. Maybe a regimme change is needed there!! Quote
catbirdseat Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 Also if memory serves me the martian year is like 325 earth days. Think about it, dude. Mars is the fourth planet, while the earth is the third. Longer orbit, longer year. Quote
whirlwind Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 (edited) probly would have to travel light speed, but it would be intresting to see if ageing is relitive to the time it takes to travel around the sun, wounldn't it be posible if this was true to increase a persons life span, oh and if it 365 for us mars takes longer doesn't it? if it is 325 would it then decrease? and could decay time diifer, which would effect a lot of things Edited January 9, 2004 by wirlwind Quote

Mars is the fourth planet, while the earth is the third. Longer orbit, longer year. Catbird...think about that for a second. Who says the planets travel at the same velocity? Ok, I'll be forced to do a web search like Dru.ok, the Martian day is 24.6 hours and the martian year is 1.8 earth years. Here is your link Look at the average temp, think the astronauts would use 800 power down or Polargard 3D? Edited January 9, 2004 by Ducknut Quote
