djd Posted March 20, 2002 Posted March 20, 2002 While out driving in our current snow storm, I went by Marmot and decided I had enough of the crappy traffic and stopped in. It turns out Jim birdwell is going to give slide show this evening on some of his climbs. He was standing around looking bored so I went up and talked with him for a few minutes. Nice guy, amazing climbs. Anyways if you are in the area, stop by. You can call marmot for more details (425.453.1515). David Quote
mvs Posted March 20, 2002 Posted March 20, 2002 I'll be there, simpering helplessly. Who else is going? --Michael Quote
Dru Posted March 20, 2002 Posted March 20, 2002 maybe sexual chocolate will show up and add the dance of the woo li masters to the moondance in his repetoire. Quote
TimL Posted March 20, 2002 Posted March 20, 2002 I'll be there even though I have a final exam tommorow. Anybody know what time? Quote
AlpineK Posted March 20, 2002 Posted March 20, 2002 Jim's climbed some bad ass stuff, and I'm sure he's a nice guy, but his presentations suck. Unless you like looking at all the photos from the trip including the stop at Costco before the trip. Check it out, but remember you've been warned. Quote
pindude Posted March 20, 2002 Posted March 20, 2002 7:30. Bring your wallet ($6), and they ask you to RSVP. Here's some scant info from Marmot's site: http://www.marmotmountain.com/events.htm Considering the man and what he can say, it'll be $6 well worth spent. -pindude Quote
MysticNacho Posted March 20, 2002 Posted March 20, 2002 Patagonia slideshow at Second Ascent tonight, I'm going to that one instead. It's free, too! WoohoO! Quote
sobo Posted March 20, 2002 Posted March 20, 2002 Not to sound like a dope or anything, but we are all referring to Jim "The Bird" BRIDwell, aren't we...? Quote

W Posted March 21, 2002 Posted March 21, 2002 if Jim's sponsored it's by Marlboro and Budweiser. Actually, I know he's sponsored by Kong. Quote
bigwalling Posted March 21, 2002 Posted March 21, 2002 He's also sponsored by metolius. I'm going tonight. I hope it's a good show. Quote
Jason_Martin Posted March 21, 2002 Posted March 21, 2002 I went to one of his shows last year... Death by Slideshow. It was incredibly long and boring. He described just about every move on every pitch of a thirty pitch climb... He's not a good storyteller. Jason Quote
MysticNacho Posted March 21, 2002 Posted March 21, 2002 Death by slideshow is what I just experienced. Charlie Fowler's show on Patagoina was mostly interesting, but he wasn't a good storyteller either. Lots of pictures of Steph Davis though..... Quote
AlpineK Posted March 21, 2002 Posted March 21, 2002 I just saw Charlies slide show. I also saw JB's slide show that Jason saw. While CF's show wasn't supper dupper it was at least 1,000 times better than JB's last year. Don't get me wrong I respect JB, but his presentation skills are atrocious. Awesome climber, looks like a great time, but crikey! My eyes were getting droopy for a couple of minutes halfway into the second reel. Quote
Elvis Posted March 21, 2002 Posted March 21, 2002 Don't be dissing on the Bird, that's like making fun of Muhammad Ali. Quote

I'm just saying you might want to save your $6 so you can buy a book about JB written by someone other than JB. Quote
mvs Posted March 21, 2002 Posted March 21, 2002 I thought the show was great. He does have a deadpan kind of voice, but I actually like hearing about the pro or lack of it on every pitch. He seemed to remember every placement, especially on some flaky A4 climbing in the "ice chimneys". Fascinating! But I did see a lot of nodder-offers snoozing then jerking awake --Michael Quote
TimL Posted March 21, 2002 Posted March 21, 2002 I thought JB's slideshow was good. He didn't seem like a grand story teller but his pictures and descriptions of the route were great. Just being able to see the legend in person was entertaining. Quote
specialed Posted March 21, 2002 Posted March 21, 2002 Fowler's definetly a badass but I didn't think his Patagonia ascents were pushing any standards or anything. Though I think its cool he gos down there almost every year for the season. Quote
