cj001f Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 Here's a picture I found of the old lookout on Mt. Hood. Anyone know why I can't import a bitmap? Quote

b-rock Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 I've heard that there's all kinds of old crap on Cooper left over from a failed attempt at some sort of cable lift to the summit. Didn't know there used to be a tower, pretty cool. Quote
rbw1966 Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 When a buddy of mine and I did Cooper in November of a low-snow year we saw some of those aforementioned cables. I have an old, out of print history of Mt. Hood at home and will try to remember to research what it has to say about that. Â Very cool picture Carl. I wonder if anyone has a shot of that from a further panorama. Quote
cj001f Posted September 26, 2003 Author Posted September 26, 2003 Rob- Is that Mount Hood: A Complete History by Graeur? Â The picture I got from http://www.pdxhistory.com it's got a number of cool old pictures & postcards of Cloudcap inn & hood. Â Quote
iain Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 The cables on Cooper Spur go back to when Cloud Cap was the "Timberline" of the mountain. Cooper Spur was the standard route up the mountain, and ropes were hauled up there and fixed for groups to climb up. Since the ropes were so heavy, group sizes had to be pretty large. Classic photos of women in huge dresses going up Cooper Spur are out there. Â The materials on the summit are what's left of the lookout. The sign on the lookout is down in the Cloud Cap Inn, along with a bit of the rope that was up on the mountain. I'm not sure how the steel cables come into play. Â There is also the old engine sitting down by crater rock, a step back in time. A fun way to go up to it is via the ice gulley bisecting crater rock. Quote

iain Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 I think it was used to help get the timbers up to the lookout, but some mining might have been going on too, I don't remember. I'll have to ask the old-timers. Â Quote
ivan Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 my favorite is the huge coil of hemp rope on the cooper spur...must be 100 yards long and 2 inches in diameter...several fools appear to have slung it's rotting coils and rapped off it Quote
iain Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 here's another shot from the Mazamas, ~1917 Quote
iain Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 that's exactly the question being asked about the old engine over on crater rock. I say leave it be. Along with all that helicopter prop in the upper fumarole Quote
iain Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 I came across this cool picture of when Silcox was the upper lift terminal for the Magic Mile too. I like hanging around Timberline looking at where things used to be. Be careful doing avalanche beacon practice around the Salmon River canyon area, there's a bunch of buried metal and cables from the lifts. Quote
iain Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 The lookup collapsed in the 40's from the extreme weather and just becoming run-down in general. I can only imagine the conditions it faced. The signs off the thing look like they've been sandblasted. Quote

iain Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 if you look at the south side aerial photo in the climber's register, you can see the strip of snow from govy up to the lodge where that thing was traveling. Quote
iain Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 only it wouldn't be running half the time and there'd be lines all the way to Parkdale. Quote
Alpinfox Posted September 29, 2003 Posted September 29, 2003 Â Any of your Oregonites been up Black Butte recently? The older fire lookout tower fell down in a big storm the winter before last. Quite a mess up there. Â Â Quote
