I'd get a mac if I had enough disposable income... iPod + iTunes = grin.gif

another good thing about macs and ipods: one of my friends actually managed to screw up his powerbook (he knew he was screwing around with it and acknowledged that it was his own fault), and somehow managed to boot up off his iPod to restore his system (don't ask me how, but he did it). That's just plain sweet.

If you put in enough security measures to be safe, then you can no longer do anything. Hey, it makes perfect sense, security is intended to get in people's way right?

Allison, if you had enough of a system left to get a blue screen then that means your file system was intact, which means all your data was fine... until the reformat.

Screwdriver + a friend with an intact machine -> plug your disk into friend's machine -> recover your stuff since only the OS was warped.

But, now it's too late because paying somebody to recover what was left after the reformat is prohibitively expensive. Oops

I assume by plder you mean older? There's no comparision between older macs and today's lineup running bsd. I have a system here that's been running for 243 days currently w/o a hitch boxing_smiley.gif

I concur. Also, I believe the i-Pods are like mini hard drives and that's why Ursa's friend was able to boot up his PowerBook from one.

Allison,

I just remembered about a program called "Lost and Found". I had a massive crash a few years ago: File Allocation Tables (FAT) got all kinds of screwed up. I used this program to retrieve some data that would have been lost. I thought I was so lucky that I had backed up my system less than a week earlier, but this program would have gotten it back. It ignores the FAT (what you get rid of when you a quick format), and just looks at the files on the disk directly. Some formats will go through and completely remove all the data, and if this happened then you're unfortunately SOL. Anything that's been written over since you formatted the computer (by installing your OS, programs, adding files, etc.) will be gone, but there's no way to tell what has or hasn't been written over. You'll need access to another computer with enough space on their hard drive to get everything that you need off of yours. If you need any help, PM me.

Me and the Dell guy (in Nashville) did a full reformat. Not a quick one.

Is there any hope?

I do have both a second computer (it is a Mac tho) and a second HD on my PC. It's a small one, only 2gb, but there is nothing on it.

I guess I should have either logged on on my other computer and let you guys talk me out of it or taken it to a shop. I don't know anything about computers.

Notice nobody on this board who owns a Mac ever complains about theirs. Hmmm....wonder why moon.gif

Hmmm.. Maybe they spent so much on a slow machine that they are embarressed to complain about it! boxing_smiley.gif

Hmmm...if I remember right, the G3's were classified as a supercomputer and weren't allowed to be exported to China. Yeah...that's pretty slow boxing_smiley.gif

believing a system crash was meant to get you is a sign of paranoia????

SIGNS OF PARANOIA ARE SIGNS OF A GUILTY conscience. If one trusts in the Lord Our Heavenly Father we would find paranoia slipping from our grasp as we would find that our treatment of the human race in general would be following the Golden Rule. Thus we would receive His blessings each and everyday.

Seek Him and you shall find freedom.

Gd Bless. JD smile.gif
